Ed. Note: Yesterday there were 14,387 total positives.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“The District’s reported data for Wednesday, September 9, 2020 includes 25 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 14,412.

The District reported one additional COVID-19 related deaths.

· 28-year-old male

Tragically, 616 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The community spread chart is subject to fluctuation because the data is based on symptom onset date. As national demand for testing increases and results take longer to come back in DC and across the country, DC Health has identified a need to increase the reporting lag time by four days to reduce volatility in the data. The most recent data reflects an increase in community spread. To ensure this graph accurately reflects the most recent data, the community spread count is being paused as these adjustments are made.” (more…)

Update: jhcvt366 writes in the comments:

“New heights is not closing permanently. They covered the bottom floor to hide the liquor while closed but plan to reopen in October. Unsure why the phone is disconnected. Spoke directly with the owner.”

Joanna reports: “Will miss their incredible gin selection!”

Unfortunately New Heights Restaurant’s phone has been disconnected. New Heights opened in 1986. Their website says:

“New Heights is a perennial, classy sight to behold anytime of year ….. especially in springtime when the lovely lines, colors and wood tones of the Gin Joint fold outside into the intimate, Patio-on-Calvert with its verdant, colorful plantings. (more…)

“The first concepts to open this Thursday will be Cameo, our coffee shop, and the Shop Made in DC storelet located next door.

Nazia Khan is NRG’s Director of Coffee, and the woman leading the charge along with Greg Engert, who serves as the company’s Beverage Director. Cameo has been designed to pay respect to the culturally rich and globally minded DC community; it will rotate through a lineup of direct-source coffee and tea from around the world, while prioritizing sustainable, eco-consciousness, and socially responsible choices – from the beverages served, to the compostable packaging and zero waste practices, to the makers with which we partner. Zoo

From the Smithsonian’s National Zoo:

“Our giant panda cub is growing! As our newborn packs on the grams, it is becoming a bit easier to spot on the Panda Cam. Now that the cub’s markings have come in, we have a few weeks to go before the next big milestone. Generally, newborn giant pandas open their eyes between 6 and 8 weeks of age. We can see that its eyes are still sealed when we zoom in with the Panda Cam. Many viewers have noticed that the cub’s tail appears smaller as it grows. At birth, a giant panda’s tail measures about 5 centimeters in length–roughly a quarter of its body size. In time, cubs grow into their tails. Over the next few weeks, we will also see our cub’s fur transform from soft and wispy to wooly and thick.”
