Thanks to all who passed on this awful coronaville massacre news (will closefor the foreseeable future on Halloween“) from the Washington CityPaper:

“Eric and Ian Hilton say they fought for six months to keep American Ice Company, The Brixton, Echo Park, El Rey, The Gibson, Marvin, and Players Club running through the COVID-19 pandemic, but ultimately couldn’t.”

Out of the seven which hurts the most?

Gym

Thanks to John for sending us last night: “somebody recently asked about [spin] cycling in the pandemic… SoulCycle opening their Union Market pop-up tomorrow. Classes 7 days a week @ $32/class”

1927 Florida Ave, NW

Related: Yesterday I started hearing many readers wrote that Flywheel would be permanently closing their D.C. locations. Thanks to Kevin for sending this afternoon from Business Insider:

“Flywheel Sports — a chain of spinning studios and a top competitor of SoulCycle — filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on Tuesday and will permanently close its 42 locations in the country.”

DC Government

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the DC Office of Planning (OP) launched a survey to receive community feedback on public life and activity in and around the intersection of 14th and U Streets, NW, in the heart of the U Street corridor in Ward 1. OP is seeking public feedback on ways to better preserve or improve the public spaces around this intersection and how the District can work together to enhance the types of activities that take place there. Dupont Circle

Update from Otello:

“Dear loyal friends & patrons:

After over 30 years in Dupont Circle, Otello restaurant has permanently closed its doors. As with many other restaurants, the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic has made it impossible for us to stay in business. Some other restaurants were able to pivot to pick up and delivery services, but it was determined that this was not a viable option for our little restaurant.

We hope you keep Otello in your memories as a place for good food, good times and cheer. On behalf of the entire team at Otello, we thank you for your years of patronage and we will miss you all!
– Otello Restaurant”

Sadly their phone number has been disconnected as well so it appears to be another end of an era. The Washington Post reviewed them in 1985:

“The newest red-sauce and red-check Italian restaurant is Otello, just south of Dupont Circle. (more…)

Medical

explore data here

Ed. Note: Yesterday there were 14,622 total positives.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“The District’s reported data for Monday, September 14, 2020 includes 65 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 14,687.

The District reported no additional COVID-19 related deaths.

Tragically, 616 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The community spread chart is subject to fluctuation because the data is based on symptom onset date. As national demand for testing increases and results take longer to come back in DC and across the country, DC Health has identified a need to increase the reporting lag time by four days to reduce volatility in the data. The most recent data reflects an increase in community spread. To ensure this graph accurately reflects the most recent data, the community spread count is being paused as these adjustments are made.” (more…)

Columbia Heights

Ed. Note: The Coupe opened in Columbia Heights back in October 2012.

Thanks to all who messaged us about the name change coming to Columbia Heights’ The Coupe on 11th Street, NW between Park and Monroe:

“Any word on The Coupe? I walked by today and the front doors now have signage for “Magnolia Cafe” and the inside is totally decorated for Christmas, complete with a Christmas tree. Would love to know what’s going on there!”

“Branding and signage at The Coupe has been replaced by “Magnolia cafe.” I’m intrigued, but can’t find anything about the change anywhere…”

Hmm, if you go to The Coupe’s website you get the following prompt: (more…)
