“Dear U Hall friends and family,

There is no easy way to say this, but here we go: It is with tremendous sadness that we share with you today that U Street Music Hall is closing effective immediately.

When we closed our doors to the public this past March, just days before we were to celebrate our club’s 10-year anniversary, none of us could have imagined at the time that we would still be closed nearly seven months later with no return date in sight because of an unrelenting disease called COVID-19. But we kept our hopes up even in the face of an impossible situation because we love what we do so much: presenting the best music in the world for the best fans in the world. “A little before 6 PM this evening officers were in the area near the 1300 block of Half St. SW when they heard the sound of gunshots. They responded to that location and located an adult female victim that had received a gunshot wound to the lower extremity. She was transported to hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injury. Investigation revealed that the victim was walking in the block when a vehicle traveled by and opened fire.

Anyone who may have any information about this offense or cameras in the area is encouraged to contact the First District Detectives Office at 202-299-2025 and reference case # 20141968. Thank you.”

Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.

The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.

“The Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s 6-week-old giant panda cub is a male, Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) scientists confirmed.

Zoo veterinarians say that the cub appears to be healthy and strong. During a brief exam conducted by the panda team Oct. 1, keepers took the cub’s measurements. He weighed 3.6 pounds and measured 14 inches from nose to tail tip. His abdominal girth was 12.5 inches. Both of the cub’s eyes are starting to open. “SHOOTING, UPPER NW DC— Male walked into McDonalds at Wisconsin Ave and Van Ness St NW-DC. He may have been shot near 40th St and Wisconsin Ave in North Cleveland Park/Tenleytown area. He has been struck in the arm. Police searching for a crime scene.

update on Tenleytown shooting: Approx. 75yr-old man was in his car near the firehouse when a pedestrian fired shot(s) into the auto injuring his arm. He then drove to McDonalds for help.”

MPD later reported what would be a shooting homicide at the gas station on Connecticut Ave across the street from Politics and Prose: “Confirmed Shooting in the 4900 block of Connecticut Ave NW. Lookout for: 2 B/M’s DARK COMPLXN, TALLER POSSIBLY WEARING NEW BALANCE TENNIS SHOES.”

On that The Washington Post reported:

“The shooting occurred about 1:30 a.m. near Connecticut and Nebraska avenues NW, according to a police official.

The victim was not identified immediately but appeared to be a teenager or young man, police said. It appeared that he was shot twice, the official said.”

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Monday, October 5, 2020, in 4900 block of Connecticut Avenue, Northwest. (more…)

“Today, DC Health released an updated list of high-risk states where the seven-day moving average of daily new COVID-19 cases is 10 or more per 100,000 persons. Mayor Bowser issued Mayor’s Order 2020-081 with requirements for all people traveling into Washington, DC from high-risk states.

Anyone coming into Washington, DC from a high-risk state (within the prior 14 days) who was traveling for non-essential activities will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days from their arrival in the District. Individuals traveling from high-risk states after essential travel or arriving in the District for essential travel are required to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 for 14 days and, if they show signs or experience symptoms of COVID-19, they are to self-quarantine and seek medical advice or testing.

Travel to and from Maryland and Virginia is exempt from the Order. This list should be used until Monday, October 19.

New Mexico was added to the updated list. Arizona was removed from the updated list.
