parks

From the National Park Service:

“Since 2013, when the National Park Service began reducing the deer population in Rock Creek Park, the park’s tree seedling density has more than doubled. To continue to protect and restore native plants and promote healthy and diverse forests, Rock Creek Park will conduct deer management operations between Nov. 16, 2020, and March 31, 2021.

During this period, the NPS plans to reduce deer populations in Rock Creek Park and, for the first time, will include other areas under Rock Creek Park’s management. These areas could include Melvin Hazen Park, Soapstone Valley Park, Pinehurst Parkway, Glover Archbold Park, Battery Kemble Park and Fort Totten Park, among others. (more…)

wildlife

Thanks to Nancy for sending: “saw this owl on the Rock Creek Park bike trail north of Porter Street before the footbridge Tuesday afternoon”

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

Have a question for the community about David’s Tent on the National Mall. I live nearby so have seen plenty of concerts, advocacy campaigns, art installations and more take place on the National Mall. Yet David’s Tent has been there for years! And they’ve recently added another small tent (maybe for bathrooms). I’m surprised that a religious organization could have a permanent presence in what’s technically a national public park. Do permits from the National Park Service not have limits?”

“Claudius from Adams Morgan is not thrilled about Monday”

[Ed. Note: this photo was sent on a Monday in July – working through the queue slowly, slowly. Appreciate everyone’s patience!]

Crime

“Dear PoPville,

Friday afternoon my kids and I were almost run over by a crazy driver in the 2600 block of P st, nw. in Georgetown. We had just parked and were waking to the sidewalk when someone came barreling down the block, crashed into the car parked behind us and then slammed into my car, pushing it into the sidewalk and almost crushing my 8 year old and me and totaling the car. Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.

The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.
