WHO/WHAT: This holiday season, everyone will get the chance to pay it forward by donating gently worn or new winter coats and accessories to three local charities while shopping one of a kind local art and vintage clothing. To continue their mission of building community by enhancing experiences through art & design and creating unique connections, Swatchroom is launching COMMON THREAD, celebrating what connects everybody through their ability to provide for each other individually and collectively. Designed to offer an accessible and sustainable retail experience focused on giving new life to gently used clothing, footwear & accessories while supporting the local community.

Curated vintage men’s and women’s clothing and one of a kind sneakers can also be shopped during a special vintage and bespoke resale. Artwork by local artists like mixed media artist Nicole Salimbene, sculptor & painter Michael West, and photographer Violetta Markelou, will be available for purchase during an exciting art exhibition.

Clothing Drive – All clothing donations will benefit N Street Village, Central Union Mission and Women Giving Back.

There’s an little known DC Code section that allows community groups to file lawsuits against properties that are being used to sell, store or manufacture illegal drugs; that are being used to unlawfully store or sell guns; or that are being used to facilitate prostitution.

Some residents in Truxton Circle have a pretty dire and threatening situation going on with a tenant on a block and we’re considering all options. Over the past 24 months, the residents and/or guests of this household have dealt drugs, brandished firearms, threatened other residents, destroyed property, spray-painted security cameras, and generally created an unlivable situation in the immediate area of the property. To celebrate DC native Haili Blassingame’s debut novel, THEY ALL FALL IN LOVE AT THE END, Lost City Books is throwing a launch party themed around messy love stories. Haili, and a crew of writers she has assembled, will read excerpts from their work, but there will also be audience participation in the form of anonymously submitting messy dating stories. It’s going to be a night of laughter, of gasps, of books, of great company. Refreshments will be available. We can’t wait to see you there!

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, in the 5700 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast.

At approximately 9:35 pm, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, members were advised that DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services had transported a juvenile victim, unconscious and unresponsive, to an area hospital. After all life-saving efforts failed, the victim was pronounced dead. Detectives’ investigation revealed that the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while inside a vehicle, at the listed location.

The decedent has been identified as 1 year-old Carmelo Duncan, of Southeast, DC. (more…)

Announcement

Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.

The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.
