Election

“Dear PoPville,

I feel like this sign missed the mark. Why is the only DC women’s team listed as the Mystics and why are they ranked last? The Spirit literally sells out the stadium. Women’s sports are bigger than ever! There are so many DC women’s teams and it feels like everywhere (even an informational poster about rank choice voting) the DC women’s teams are not getting the respect they deserve. It makes me sad!”

Fundraiser

“Dear PoPville,

would be willing to amplify a gofundme for a local man who was detained by ICE at his job on Monday. Willian is being held by at the Farmville detention center. His mother, Ana, has been my children’s nanny for nearly 4 years and I’m doing whatever I can to help – and quickly realize the thing most in my control is to help reduce the financial burden for the family.”

The gofundme says:

“For nearly four years, Ana has been a cherished part of our family. She has cared for our children with unwavering love, patience, and dedication, and over the years she has become much more than an employee—she has become family.

This week, her son, Willian, was detained by ICE while at work. Willian is the devoted father of two young U.S.-citizen children and the son of a naturalized U.S. citizen. He has been participating in the immigration process for years, has active work authorization issued by the U.S. government, and was actively pursuing his case through the legal system. His detention has left his family facing uncertainty and significant legal expenses at a moment when they should be focused on supporting one another. (more…)

DC Government

From the office of Chairman Phil Mendelson:

“DC Council Chairman Phil Mendelson released the following statement regarding the District’s Fiscal Year 2025 Budget proposal.

“The Mayor handed the Council a budget with hundreds of millions of dollars of cuts in critical programs like the Early Childhood Educator Pay Equity Fund, the Childcare Subsidy Program, Universal Paid Leave, Access to Justice and domestic violence programs,” Mendelson said. “The budget I am proposing restores all these programs. A vast majority of the money I am using for these restorations comes from tax revenues the CFO withheld from the Mayor’s budget formulation, as well as a small reduction in the fiscal stabilization reserve fund.”

“This isn’t the first time the Council has drawn from reserves for budgets,” Mendelson said. “The city’s goal is to have 60-days spending in reserve. Right now, we have over 60 days’ reserves. With this budget, we’ll have 62 days.”
