“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to share two things that happened to me this morning in Columbia Heights. I came out around 5:30am on 14th and Irving to walk my dog and about half way down Irving (going toward 13th) and I find a bunch of clothes strewn about. It took me a minute to realize that this wasn’t a pile of things set by the street by someone trying to get rid of them, but was instead a dumping ground for what appeared to be the remnants of a robbery.

So, being 5:30 in the morning, I didn’t want to just stand there by it while I waited for police to show up, so I quickly scooped everything back into the bag and continued on my walk. About 7 minutes later, and on the other side of the road, I noticed a man coming up behind me. I had stopped at a tree right before the CVS for my dog to go to the bathroom and turned to face the oncoming person so I didn’t have my back to him while I was bent over cleaning up after my dog. As I was standing back up, I realized the man had stopped and was standing directly in front of me. He stared me dead in the face with crazy eyes and as I tried to move around him I said “hey” hoping that he would move along but he instead starts yelling “WHAT THE F**K are you doing??? Picking up dog poop???”

So I respond, “Yes, dogs poop and you have to pick it up… That’s how this goes. I am doing what I’m supposed to.” So he then steps toward me and starts screaming “YOU LOOK STUPID!!! YOU LOOK SO F*****G STUPID RIGHT NOW, YOU STUPID B***H!” At this point I have to reach into my pocket to grab my pepper spray and wave it at him and scream for him to go on and get out of my face. He started to move back at this point, so I took that opportunity to dart across the street. He followed along with me as I ran up the other side of the street, still screaming obscenities at me until I was able to get into my complex.

I am certain he was on drugs, but what also alarmed me is he appeared very normal looking aside from his insane eyes. No dirty clothes or bad hygiene or drug user look to him. His hair was done in twists and he looked to be maybe in his late 20s/early 30s. I’m still very perplexed over why anyone would be so infuriated by me cleaning up after my dog, so can I only assume he was on one of the new synthetic drugs. Just be very aware of your surroundings, neighbors. I hate to think what might have happened to me if I didn’t see him coming or was without my pepper spray.

Long story short, I immediately called MPD and reported the man and also turned in the bag I found. I included the pictures below and hope it finds its owner.”

A couple weeks ago we learned some more about The Airedale opening in the former Mad Momos space this Thursday! I stopped in for a peek and while finishing touches were on going I think folks will be very happy. They added some real German beer garden tables on the roof deck and got lots of cool art and photos for the space. And one of the owners is a serious Chelsea fan so expect the downstairs part to show English Premier League matches as well as German Bundesliga matches. In addition to showing some Formula One too. DCRA has given them approval to serve beer, wine and liquor starting at 10am for those who like to watch with a bit of an edge.

Upstairs will be traditional seating for dining without TVs. I should get their menus soon so stay tuned for that – or just stop by on Thursday. And I got to taste the Old Overholt Ice Cream and it is amazing. It also has a kick. I guarantee you it will be on every single “best frozen drinks/treats list” we are bound to be bombarded with next summer. Oh man it is so freaking good…

Stay tuned for the beer list to drink here too – with a new shaded roof deck so you won’t boil:

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to give a head’s up to those who live in the Columbia Heights, Mt. Pleasant, and neighboring communities. At about 5:20 pm (or so) Wednesday, this man assaulted me at 16th and Spring NW. I was crossing 16th from east to west in the southbound crosswalk. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him jog ahead as if he were running for the bus stop at the Woodner. I was headed in that direction myself, but because I was using a trolley cart, I stayed in the crosswalk to use the cut. Right after I made my turn to head south, I realized this guy was in front of me and he just stopped, keeping his back to me. I thought, “okay…whatever”, and made to move around him to his left. He then moved and purposefully blocked me again, still keeping his back to me. I said “Dude, move out of the way.” His yelled response essentially was “Don’t call me dude. Why should I move out of yourway, bitch?”

All I remember clearly was him being offended about me calling him dude and him calling me bitch. At this point, I pulled out my phone to call the cops and while I was trying to navigate to the emergency call screen, he grabbed my hand around my phone and squeezed hard. It’s over five hours later and I can still feel the pressure on my index finger and thumb joints. Luckily, someone who had crossed the street with us realized something not right was going down and asked if I needed assistance. I requested he call the cops, which he did.

The man holding me must have realized I was in no way going to be an easy target for whatever this was. He released me and started walking south on 16th. Since he had actually touched me, which I knew might qualify for some level of assault, there was no way I was letting him leave without getting his picture taken. I ran up beside him and snapped a few photos. The attached photo was the best I could get. I told him I was going to file charges and he said something like “You do that.” I fell back because I had a picture of him and I was in no way looking to engage with him further. He turned down the garage entrance driveway of the Woodner and that was the last I saw of him. I’m not sure if he lives in the Woodner, in a neighboring building, or if he was just using the cut-through I’ve been told is at the back of the Woodner parking lot.

The police responded very quickly and I filed a report with them. The primary thing at this point is that this man needs to be identified. If you recognize him and know his name or where he can be found, please contact MPD and give them that information. My case number is 15-124-907. The cops do have copies of the pictures I took. I showed his picture to the security guards at my building so they were aware of the incident and one recognized him from another incident. The security guard was also looking for this guy’s identity for that issue. This is obviously someone with issues and is causing problems in the neighborhood. Thanks for listening, and stay safe. If you don’t know who this guy is, but you see him on the street, stay as far away from him as you can. I have absolutely no idea what set him off, but he was very much the aggressor in this situation as I had no interaction with him at all prior to his stepping into my path and blocking my way.”

A reader reports:

“leaving the debate viewing at Lous’ City Bar, my boyfriend & I witnessed a massive assault in front of the Bell-Lincoln Multicultural Center. There was at least 20 teens brawling in the street, onlookers at the bus stop & other kids crying. This was at 10:30 pm.

We called the police, who showed in minutes, & took the time to chat with us about what we saw. Of course, most of the kids-including the ones who were being kicked while down-had taken off.

Maybe just a testament to the crime surge, but there were a lot of people still actively out last night. I’m worried for the kids.”
