This pocket park was home to the protest benches back in 2009. Other controversy surrounding the park revolved around complaints of drinking, drug use and other crime. That being said – calling this a park does feel like stretching the truth a bit:

Earlier we noted the new paint job at The Airedale coming to the former Mad Momos space. Signs now painted and a bit more info from the owner:

“We have a new hand-painted sign courtesy of Ross from Sure Hand signs out of Richmond.

The Old Overholt soft serve is ready to go. We have consulted with a few sources and have had success (it isn’t easy getting something with well over a pint of whiskey in it to freeze). We feel we have achieved the perfect combination of flavor and booziness.

3 new items have been added to the regular menu; a spinach quiche, a gazpacho and polenta with sauteed mushrooms. We will also offer a tartine on a regular menu that will also be available for brunch. All are vegetarian or vegan and the polenta is gluten free.

We would also like to note that the Airedale will always welcome well-behaved dogs.

Our additional beer lines (and prosecco line) are being installed this week and everything is accelerating towards our launch. We are planning on opening in August.”

Stay tuned for an exact opening date!

A few weeks ago we learned about plans for The Airedale Gastropub and Beer Garden coming to Columbia Heights:

“Our bar program includes prosecco based cocktails, European classics like the Aperol spritz, French 75 and the Pimm’s Royal Cup as well as our own creations. The selection of spirits will be quite whiskey-forward with ryes and bourbons being well represented at all price points. We also plan on serving an Old Overholt soft serve, each serving containing a full shot of rye. We will offer an entire range of classic, handmade cocktails as well. There will be 15 beers on tap and we will make our own Radler (don’t worry we’ll have Stiegl too).

The menu is classic European bar and cafe food served a la carte. The focus is on authentic, accessible pub and bar food from across Europe with one or two local favorites added as well. I have attached a preliminary menu for your consideration.”

Like the toned down paint job?

Ed. Note: Graffiti intentionally whited out to limit exposure

“Dear PoPville,

The parks department has been doing a great job keeping Meridian Hill Park looking good this year. It’s so disappointing to see that vandalism with graffiti that is starting to show up. Overall it feels like this type of vandalism is on the rise again in DC. Do you know what if anything the DC police are doing about this?”

Are others noting a rise in graffiti around town?

Ed. Note: Park Police are in charge of preventing crime in the park not MPD (DC) police.

“Has anyone noticed the young and older men around the Potbellys in COLUMBIA HEIGHTS? They seem “fazed”, “gone”, and on something other than weed. What are they on? What are police or community agencies doing to help these men?”

Sadly it appears to be the synthetic marijuana we’ve been hearing so much about. A reader sends this story from NBC Washington earlier today:

“Synthetic Drug Use Suspected Near Columbia Heights Metro Station

More than a dozen people suspected of using dangerous synthetic drugs were treated in D.C. on Friday — including four people believed to have overdosed near the Columbia Heights Metro station, according to sources within the D.C. Fire and EMS Department.”
