A reader reports:

“Curious if anyone knows what is going on at El Tamarindo? I walked by a couple of weeks ago, and they had a health code violation on the door and handmade “Closed” signs on the window. I walked by today and the storefront is papered over, with signs saying they will reopen in April. From the huge dumpsters nearby, it looks like they are ripping out half the restaurant. I can’t imagine that is unrelated to the health code issue?”

Ed. Note: El Tamarindo celebrated their 30th anniversary back in 2012. Also there is a major renovation going on next door at the old De Vinos/Dahlak spaces which may also be using the dumpsters seen. Anyone else hear what’s happening at El Tamarindo. Love ’em or Hate ’em they are definitely an Adams Morgan institution.

Ed. Note: This is the location of the former Knickerbocker Theatre – if you’ve never seen the video below – it’s chilling:

“Dear PoPville,

Thought you might want to cover this – could be a huge change to a central part of the neighborhood.

Below is from ANC commissioner Billy Simpson on the Adams Morgan list serv:

Neighbors,

As some of you may have already heard, PN Hoffman has submitted plans to ANC1C for the proposed re-development of the lot where the SunTrust building and plaza currently sit at the corner of Columbia Road NW and 18th Street NW. The plans that were provided to ANC1C show a substantial building that almost completely eliminates the plaza. The plans are now posted on ANC1C’s website. (more…)

From an email:

“We’re sad to say that we’ll be closing our Adams Morgan location for good on April 30th and reopening at 3289 M Street NW on May 2nd. We love Adams Morgan and will miss it dearly but we’re also SO EXCITED to move Violet to a much larger space and bring our brand and exceptional customer service to Georgetown!

Since we’re moving moving to Georgetown at the end of April, we wanted to show our appreciation for all that our neighbors in Adams Morgan have given us over the last 5 years. To celebrate our 5th anniversary, on 3/11, we will be making three $1,100 donations to non-profits in the greater Adams Morgan neighborhood. We would love for our customers (and neighbors) to vote to assist us in picking the recipients. Voting will begin tomorrow at 5pm via an online form. Likes and comments on social media will not count towards voting. Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ShopVioletDC/ and Instagram @shopvioletdc to cast your vote!” (more…)
