1923 9th Street, NW

From an email:

“Canteen, NRG’s roving summer beer garden, will return this Friday, June 9th.

This summer, it’s home will be at 9th & U streets in Shaw, where it’ll run Thursdays-Sundays for eight weeks. As you know, Canteen was stationed at 2100 M Street serving the Golden Triangle community last year. We’re excited to bring the beer garden to 1923 9th street NW in Shaw, and make it bigger and better with 20 beer drafts (twice as many as last year) as well as two additional handles dedicated to ciders, a selection of summer sipping wines (white and rosé, naturally), and the infamous bourbon slushy will return.

Last year at 2100 M Street, NW

Guests can expect the very best craft beers sourced locally, nationally, and from overseas. We will be pouring classic German-style lagers, like Mahrs Bräu Kellerbier Ungespundet Hefetrüb; bone-dry Belgian ales, including De Ranke Simplex and De la Senne Taras Boulba; outstanding local hop-driven offerings, The Veil’s Sitdwn and BHUMBL among them, not to mention a fresh, rare keg of Double Dry-Hopped Sungazer, from Charles Towne Fermentory in South Carolina; and some delicious sours, like Grimm Cube: Cuvee #4, J.Wakefield Stush, and Upland Cursed Kettles.

Here is the Canteen opening list so far: (more…)

A reader reports:

“Just wanted to report a crime that occurred tonight on the 1000 block of U St. NW. I was walking down the block when I heard a young (by young I mean both the victim and suspect appear to be in their early 20s) blonde girl crying on her cell phone that she was just tackled into an alley on the block, right by Corte Salon. She described her attacker as a young white male, about 5’6, “chubby,” with curly hair, wearing a short sleeve shirt and pants. She said he tackled her into the alley, at which point she started screaming. It sounded like an attempted sexual assault but I did not probe. He got up and fled down the alley. I found some police and she gave them a similar report. This all took place around 10:45pm Monday evening.”

Still hoping there’s enough room for hometown hero – Lt. Kevin McCrae, DCFD 6 Engine No.4 Platoon. According to the Washington Post:

“Joining Michelle Obama on the wall are her husband, Barack Obama, and such giants as Muhammad Ali, Harriet Tubman and Prince. Also pictured are former Washington mayor Marion Barry; comedians Dick Gregory and Dave Chappelle; musicians Chuck Brown and Wale; and local media legends Jim Vance, Donnie Simpson and Russ Parr. There’s room for a few more faces, but for now those are being kept secret.”

Many more photos after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Last Tuesday I was walking north on 10th Street from the U Street Metro (the only entrance open at this point) and passed a group of teens that had just thrown a cup of soda at a car parked in the street with its flashers on (assuming they were waiting for somebody to come out of the temporary Duke Ellington School location.) After I passed them, I heard whispers, muttering, feet movement, and 6-8 of them proceded to punch me in the face.

I swung my umbrella at them and they scattered. I called the police and the officer who handled my case said that they had been chasing them out of allies and different neighborhoods all afternoon (my incident happened at 7:05pm.) He also said that an hour before they did this to me, they did it to a woman on U Street. (more…)

Last week we learned Charcoal Town, Shawarma, was coming to the former Chix space next to The Greek Spot at 11th and U St, NW. The owner of Greek Spot took umbrage. Now the owners of Charcoal Town respond with a message of reconciliation:

“Our main dish (Charcoal Shawarma) is so unique to that level of being provided for first time in the US.

And still, with the similarity in cuisine name, Mediterranean/middle eastern and Mediterranean/Greek cuisine can provide a wide range of options and we kept that in mind while preparing our menu for legal(Neighbors contract with the landlord) and moral reasons.

Legally, we can’t mention any neighbors lease details, but we definitely made sure not to breach any point of it,and no one can accuse us of breaching any contract unless ruled differently in a legal way.

neighborhood can see the similarities, all based on assumption, but when we open on 5/31 our guests will see (and taste) the differences and how we went to great lengths to ensure that every one still can like both places for their own specialties! We are just adding awesomeness to the awesomeness that already been provided in the neighborhood rather than being a competitor and forcing people to make a choice between one or the other.
