penelope 2

“Dear PoPville,

This morning my friend woke up to a pushed in window and both of her cats missing. One cat was quickly found, but Penelope is still out there. 10 pound female tabby might be a bit skittish. Is also microchipped. Penelope lives at 9th and T Sts NW and her humans are putting up flyers, leaving out food, etc. If anyone in the Shaw/ U St area sees Penelope or a cat that looks at all similar, please call 410-236-8186.”

From an email:

Dacha Beer Garden will be kicking off Oktoberfest 2014 this coming Saturday, September 20th. Doors will open early at 11am with “Angezapft ist” — “It’s tapped!” — the cry that goes up every year when the Lord Mayor of Munich hammers a spigot into the very first keg of Oktoberfest beer.

It’s going to be a gorgeous day. We encourage folks to get there before 2pm when the crowds generally come rolling in.

Starting Saturday through the end of Oktoberfest, Dacha will be serving Weihenstephaner Oktoberfestbier and staff will be wearing full lederhosen and dirndls. We’ll be raffling off prizes, hosting some amusing contests, and serving up special beer cocktails.

Oktoberfest beer will be included on our happy hour menu (Mon-Thurs 4pm till 7pm, $5 singles and $10 for boots) until the end of October.

As always – we’ll have traditional brats, ‘kraut and pretzels – for those looking for an authentic German experience. However, we’ve also introduced new kabobs on the menu that are pretty damn delicious. Marinated beef, lamb and pork skewers served with grilled pita and a cucumber salad.”

From a press release:

“The fifth annual DC State Fair will be held on September 20, 2014 from 12PM to 7PM at the Old City Farm and Guild located at 925 Rhode Island Ave NW.

The DC State Fair is partnering this year with the Homegrown DC Fair to put on an event showcasing the District’s food and artistic talent. Various contests will be held during the Fair, including: pie baking, funkiest-looking vegetable, honey, and pickled foods. Last year’s bike accessory contest winner was a child’s seat add-on for the Capital Bikeshare bicycles. New for this year is an ice cream contest where the District’s residents can show off their home-made ice cream and gelato. The popular homebrew contest will be held later this Fall. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to let you know about a hit and run that happened around 3pm on Sunday outside of Satellite Room at the corner of Vermont and 9th.

An old gold/beige car with New Mexico plates blew through a stop sign and nailed a biker. Both the bike and the biker flipped over the hood of the car. The biker got up- shook himself off and moved to the curb. The driver rolled down her window– looked at him and then drove away. By the time I tried to get the license plate she was too far up 9th street.

I went over to the biker and he seemed to be ok- didn’t want me to call 911 but clearly visibly shaken. He wheeled his bike away shortly thereafter.

Im appalled by the way the driver handled this. For such a biking friendly city— I cannot tell you the number of times I have almost been hit by drivers not paying attention– and to then run……just despicable.”

A reader succinctly asks:

“do you know what ever happened with parcel 42?”

After naming a developer in April 2013, it looks like there was a Public Surplus Meeting in March 2014:

“The surplus meeting is held in order to receive feedback from the community on the District’s finding that the property is not required for public purposes. Comments collected at the public meeting will be submitted to the D.C. Council for their review. The surplus meeting is conducted pursuant to D.C. Official Code § 10-801.”

I’ve emailed the project manager and will update when/if he responds. Anyone else hear what’s going on?

“Dear PoPville,

Here we go again!!! – 6th and Florida Ave, NW

just had to send this picture. i don’t think i am exaggerating when i say this is probably the 30th time someone with a jack hammer has been on this corner this year. this time at 8:00 am on Saturday. there must be something absolutely amazing under that storm drain. and this is just the begging of this corner. I would love to see the city records for the last year and how many times they have had to do work on this corner (and what exactly they are doing) People living around here already have to deal with late night motor cycles and loud street noise. but a fan can’t cover up a jack hammer…”
