From the Shaw Listserv:

“This past Friday, while circling the block to find parking, noticed a package in our door. After parking while walking the 50ft from our parked car on the 500 block of R St. to our house, my wife and I passed a young African American male walking a bike with a brown mail package in one hand walking westward on R St. I didn’t think much of it – its important to me not to unfairly profile people. I got to our door and saw our package was gone – removed in the last 60 seconds since we’d seen it from out car.

I turned around and ran down R St. to 6th to look for the kid who I’d just saw and spotted him on the the other side of Rhode Island walking north on 6th St. I saw the package in his hand, but the brown wrapping was removed and it was a white shirt-like box. I was in front of the Chinese food place on 6th, looked to my left to the garbage bin, looked in it – and saw the brown wrapping addressed to me. Enraged, I ran across traffic on Rhode Island, coming up behind the man/kid picked him up and threw him on the ground, screaming at him like a maniac. He said he was sorry several times at which point I released him, grabbed my mother-in-law’s birthday gift for my wife and stormed back across Rhode Island. At my wife’s urging, I did report it to the police – who said I should’ve probably called before I confronted him. I should’ve stayed and called the police and taken a picture, but I wasn’t in that state of mind at the time. We couldn’t find him. He took down my information. The police said these kids usually come from a different area of town – so they aren’t recognized. This kid/man seemed about 18, red t-shirt, black do-rag on head, athletic shorts, walking a black bike.

I was surprised at how angry I was – but it enraged me to feel violated in front of my face, in my home. And its important to me not to negatively profile every young African American kid in the neighborhood who looks like they might live in public housing because – like all of us – most are not behaving this way. But it pissed me of to have this happen.”

“Dear PoPville,

This afternoon [Thursday] around 4:40pm I was at the Shaw Dog Park with my 10.5-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Baxter. He was doing the usual frolicking and playing along with about 5 or 6 other dogs. Out of nowhere a large black female Pitbull named Molly attacked my dog, throwing him to the ground and rolling him. I ran to the dog to try to intervene but, for obvious reasons, did not grab Baxter until the Pitbull backed off a bit. I looked up at the other owners and not one person came to aid or indicated this was their dog. After noticing that Baxter was bleeding profusely I decided that I should go to the vet. About five minutes after the Pitbull attacked my dog she attacked another… all while the owner (an elderly white male) did NOTHING to intervene or apologize.

Baxter spent 2 hours in the vet and it costs us $400 for sutures, a drain, antibiotics and a cone. He’s got a lovely shaved spot on his shoulder from the surgery. We have filed a report with animal control but we aren’t sure what the next step is. Obviously we realize there is some assumed risk when going to a dog park but it’s completely absurd that this dog’s owner apparently doesn’t care that his dog is aggressive. This dog should be euthanized and I think the owner should pay for at least half of the vet bill.

On a side note, City Paws on 14th is a fantastic vet! I’m hoping you can post this to warn other dog owners to look out for this violent dog and also hopefully someone else who was there this afternoon can speak up, call animal control and help up track down the irresponsible owner.”

“Dear PoPville,

Is this Legal? This is a photo of a flower planter at the corner of 10th and French NW in Shaw. I saw it the first time while walking my dog a few weeks ago and meant to go back for a photo but forgot until today. The flower planter is filled with broken glass and pottery. While broken glass is not uncommon in this area by any means, this looks quite intentional, presumably to ward off dogs or rats. I’m not quite sure what the payoff is supposed to be … sure, you keep the planter free of poop, but it’s full of sharp rubbish. This seems to be a hazard not only to dogs, but small children, and while I don’t want to be a nosy neighbor, I’d hate to think of some kid getting tetanus trying to pick up a shiny piece of glass out of this planter.”

“Dear PoPville,

What is the mysterious structure that they are currently building on the 625 T street, NW lot (facing the Howard Theatre) ? a few days ago, they fenced the lot and brought wood – some painted green and a few people are working on building something: since then they have been working on a mysterious structure.”

and @AlexMurray1 tweets us the photo below:

“@PoPville any ideas what they are building in front of Howard theater? I thought it was going to be a small park?”

Anyone know if this anyway related to the possible HR-57 development or more of a temporary unrelated pop up?

I’ve always loved this one on 9th Street just south of U. Can’t believe it’s still sitting empty – great details:

Following yesterday’s news of the Giant grocery store’s big win comes word of the name of the new Mintwood Place restaurant coming to City Market at O. The original Mintwood Place is in Adams Morgan. Washingtonian reported:

“The previously untitled Shaw restaurant from the Mintwood Place team now has a name: Convivial. Chef Cedric Maupillier says he and co-owner Saied Azali were drawn to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s definition of the word: “relating to, occupied with, or fond of feasting, drinking, and good company.”

They also say Convivial, to be located at 801 O Street, NW, hopes to open early next Spring. Stay tuned.
