“Dear PoPville,

I live across the street from veranda and it’s been closed for a week. What’s going on!?!? Is it permanently closed?”

Just heard from the owner and I’m happy to say they’ll just be closed for 2-3 weeks to refresh the space:

“It has been nine years and we needed to update ourself to catch up with the new development in the neighborhood.”

Stay tuned for a reopening date.

I can’t decide if I love or hate this name. I think I love it so I’m not going to read the comments of this post… But seriously, nice to see this long neglected strip of 11th getting fixed up.

Lot more info on The Bird restaurant, we learned about last week, from a press release:

“EatWell DC announces a new restaurant and bar – “The Bird” – will be located at 1337 11th St NW, DC at the Corner of O St.

The Bird will be a poultry-centric, “Beak to Toe” restaurant, showcasing vegetables from EatWell DC’s own farm in La Plata MD, EatWell Natural Farm, and local poultry producers of all stripes. The bar will feature craft cocktails & soft drinks, regional & international beers as well as wines from eco-conscious producers worldwide.

The Bird will be a cozy Logan/Shaw neighborhood space (3100 s/f) with about 75 seats and 11 bar stools inside, on two levels and additional outdoor seating on both the street level and 2nd floor terrace. The small but dramatic restaurant will have six different spaces and each space, as well as the bathrooms, will be designed differently from the next and serve as a canvas for local artists and craftsmen. From MPD:

“On Sunday, January 10, at approximately 3:00p.m., Third District Officers received a call for service for two adult males armed with pistols in the rear of the 700 block of S Street, NW. Once the officers arrived on the scene, they observed two adult males matching the description. The two males immediately fled the scene and threw both pistols to the ground.

The suspects were stopped and after further investigation they were arrested for Carrying a Pistol without a License. Two pistols were also recovered from the scene.

Excellent job by all!!”

In less pleasing news just north of the Shaw metro, DC Alerts reports at 6:38pm Sunday night:

Last month we spoke about concerts we wish we had seen but today let’s talk about one’s we actually have. In honor of the 9:30 Club’s 35th anniversary and 20 years at the current location – what was the greatest show you’ve seen at either spot? I’ll narrow it down to three – Wilco (when it snowed) I think Jan. of 2004 or something like that – was spectacular. Drive By Trucker July 2005 epic. And the first time I saw Thievery Corporation Live my mind was blown (blown to the extent I have no idea what year it was.) So many favorites, really hard to narrow down – anyway try! What was your number 1 or top 3 favorite shows you’ve seen there?

Side note: Anyone get tickets to the “9:30 WORLD’S FAIR” EXHIBITION? (more…)
