“Dear PoPville,

I live over in Shaw and drive/walk by the space at the Jefferson (next to Dacha) where La Jambe is supposedly going in. I haven’t seen any updates to the space in at least 6 months and was curious if the new place has been called off or if anything is on the horizon (the La Jambe signage is still on the windows). Fingers crossed that something good comes of the space because it’d be great to have another awesome place on 7th St.”

La Jambe tells me via email:

“The quick update is that we’re waiting on final permits from the city to start our build-out. Everything is in place and ready to go when that happens (we’re hoping in the next week or two). I think the snow slowed things down a bit, not surprisingly. More broadly, we’re aiming to open in early May.”

Thursday, February 4th at 7pm at the Shaw Library [1630 7th Street, NW]

Description:

Torture—that most notorious aspect of medieval culture and society—has evolved into a dominant mythology, suggesting that the Middle Ages was a period during which sadistic torment was inflicted on citizens with impunity and without provocation: popular museums displaying such gruesome implements as the rack, the strappado, the gridiron, the wheel, and the Iron Maiden can be found in many modern European cities. These lurid images of medieval torture have re-emerged within recent discussions on American foreign policy and the introduction of torture legislation as a weapon in the “War on Terror”, and raised questions about its history and reality, particularly given its proliferation in some literary genres and its relative absence in others.

Larissa Tracy challenges preconceived ideas about the prevalence of torture and judicial brutality in medieval society by arguing that their portrayal in literature is not mimetic. Instead, she argues that the depictions of torture and brutality represent satire, critique and dissent; they have didactic and political functions in opposing the status quo.

PRG Corporate Executive Chef Demetrio A. Zavala will be at the helm of the restaurant and looks to create some memorable cuisine in the North Shaw neighborhood. In addition to traditional Neapolitan style pizza, there will be 13 pizzas on the menu representing the 13 colonies when the Declaration of Independence was signed. Serendipitously, the restaurant is 1776 square feet – 1776 was the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. Serious Streetscape Love Coming to 7th Street from N to Florida Ave – Expect Some Traffic Issues

“Temporary Traffic Lane Changes on 7th Street NW Begin January 19 for Streetscape Project
Commuters advised to seek alternate routes

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will alter the traffic patterns on 7th Street, NW, from N Street to Florida Avenue for a construction project that begins Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at 7 am, weather permitting. The work is expected to continue until January 2017.

The change in traffic patterns is necessary for the Streetscape Project around the Howard Theater area. Work will be extensive and includes the installation of new streetlights, traffic signals and landscaping along 7th Street. The improvements also include new sidewalks, ramps, curbs, gutters, multiuse meters, catch basins and bike racks. New trees will be planted and the roadway will be milled and overlayed. (more…)
