mugging

“Dear PoPville,

I was mugged today [Sunday] in the 800 block of Varnum Street, NW. The guy followed me all the way from Grant Circle (Webster and N. Hampshire) to Webster and 7th, where I stopped to look behind me. He walked in front of me and I went to the right down Varnum from 7th. He came up behind me again and grabbed my purse, knocked me down, and punched me in the eye and head six times. He then took the purse and walked away down the side of a house and through the back gate. I called the police, and had to go to the hospital and get a CAT scan.

It happened at 12:50 pm.

I talked to the guy who had been out on his porch with his dog when the assault took place (or he came out right afterward; I can’t remember), and he said he saw the guy, knew who he was, that the guy walked past there every day, usually wears either a navy jacket or a black jacket with a Batman symbol on the back, used to be a boxer (because when I told the witness that I thought he used to be a boxer because of the way he hit me … holding his punch, not breaking the bone, doing the exact amount of damage to make me let go of the purse) he said yes he heard the guy used to box back in the day. He is about 6’3″, some stubble on his face, dark-complexion, built like a boxer, and the witness told me he thinks the guy is late 40’s, and seems “slow” to him; not okay in the head. The witness said he would call the police when he saw the guy again. He said he kept trying to tell the police it was an older guy and they kept trying to insinuate it was a young guy. I had the same experience when the officer said in a voice of surprise “YOUNG?” and I insisted he was older, told how he held his punches, etc etc. The witness offered to ride with the police and try to identify the guy and they told him no.”

From the Takoma Park Police Department:

“During the last month or so we have seen a regional increase in robberies involving carjacking and street robberies of lone female victims walking home or to or from their cars. This recent one is the second carjacking in the City in the last month. The other one involved the victim’s Subaru being stolen and the next day, it was involved in an armed robbery in Prince George’s County and a resulting police chase and apprehension. We have had three street robberies in the City in the last month. All of these met the same general pattern; females walking from public transportation or from their cars. Montgomery County has had several of these robberies on the border of the City and the District of Columbia. The District of Columbia has been inundated with robberies along the borders and in the 4th and 5th Districts. In one of the District of Columbia cases, the victim resisted and was wounded. Prince George’s County has had numerous cases as well. Several of the gas station purse snatches are most likely related as well. Often times we see these cars carjacked and then “rented” to another criminal to commit other crimes. As cars are getting harder to steal, the back lash has been to directly take them from the owners. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was alerted via a post on Facebook that your blog covered the closing of China American Inn. While I appreciate the public notification of the establishment’s closing (I myself had discovered this a few weeks back when going to dine at another restaurant on the same block), I don’t think your coverage effectively conveyed they importance of China American Inn (also referred to as China A, China America, or the carry out) to the Petworth Community.

I was born and raised in the Petworth neighborhood. I have seen the neighborhood change and evolve from a lower/mid income mostly African American community to a gentrified neighborhood offering a farmer’s market and al fresco dining. Before there was Domku, or any other swanky bar, there was China A. Walking to the carry out and eating on your porch or at the rec with your friends was a rite of passage in the Petworth community. China provided affordable dining options for a lower income families like my own growing up; a 5 dollar chicken wing special would not only feed us for the night but provide sustenance for the next day.

Although Danny’s remains open, China American Inn was one of the last remnants of the “old” Petworth. It’s closure represents the full transition from the Petworth that raised me to the Petworth that is now unfamiliar. While some are anxiously awaiting the revelation of what new hip spot on will replace China American Inn, others who were essentially raised on China A are saddened. China A was more than a hole in the wall, it was part of what made Petworth a community that will be missed and I think it deserves more than a by-line on your blog.”

“Dear PoPville,

Just a heads up about some broken windows in the Petworth neighborhood. My boyfriend was parked near the intersection of Randolph and 8th last night. Sometime after midnight, but before 5pm today his side mirror was punched/smashed up. It could’ve been from a person or a car; I’ve attached a photo (above). Nothing was stolen from the car.

On NYE a friend of a friend (so no one connected to myself or my roommates) parked in front of my house (on 8th st) and had their back window smashed out. In that case the criminal might have been tempted because something was left in the car.

If any of you park on the street it would be a good idea to keep an eye out, take things out of your car, etc. If anyone saw someone hit and run on Randolph or saw anything relating to the other incident it would be great if you could let me know.”

From a press release:

“The briefcase that held Abraham Lincoln’s handwritten notes during the Civil War returns to Washington, DC, for a six month exhibit at President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home [2nd and Upshur St, NW]. While living at the Cottage with his family during the summers of 1862, 1863, and 1864, President Lincoln carried papers in the briefcase on his daily commute to the White House. A photo album made for Tad Lincoln by the 150th Pennsylvania Volunteers, a company stationed at the Cottage during the Civil War to guard the Lincoln family, will also be on view in the exhibit. The briefcase and photo album are on loan from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, IL, and will be on display at President Lincoln’s Cottage through the end of June 2014. “Dear PoPville,

We’re excited to be a part of all the new Georgia Ave. development! Located just a block from the Petworth metro station (above Manny & Olga’s Pizza), Cardon Studios is a neighborhood music school offering Voice, Piano, and Guitar lessons. Having moved from a smaller space in Columbia Heights, we work with mostly adult students (some kids, too) in private lessons and group classes.”

“Dear PoPville,

We were woken at 4:30 this morning by knocking at our front door. A passerby noticed water spraying from below our porch and wanted to make sure we were aware of it. I ran down stairs and sure enough our basement was flooding.

In all the commotion we didn’t properly thank the fellow or get his name. I don’t know how long he was knocking, but it was several minutes at least in the freezing weather. I can’t even imagine the damage we would be dealing with if he hadn’t alerted us, but it would be substantial to say the least.

We would very much like to find our good samaritan to thank him and give him a gift card to Domku or DC Reynolds or something like that. He was walking on 7th between Upshur and Taylor around 4:30am. And he’s clearly a good egg. But that’s all we know, can you help us?”

Hopefully he is a reader!
