“Dear PoPville,

I was alerted via a post on Facebook that your blog covered the closing of China American Inn. While I appreciate the public notification of the establishment’s closing (I myself had discovered this a few weeks back when going to dine at another restaurant on the same block), I don’t think your coverage effectively conveyed they importance of China American Inn (also referred to as China A, China America, or the carry out) to the Petworth Community.

I was born and raised in the Petworth neighborhood. I have seen the neighborhood change and evolve from a lower/mid income mostly African American community to a gentrified neighborhood offering a farmer’s market and al fresco dining. Before there was Domku, or any other swanky bar, there was China A. Walking to the carry out and eating on your porch or at the rec with your friends was a rite of passage in the Petworth community. China provided affordable dining options for a lower income families like my own growing up; a 5 dollar chicken wing special would not only feed us for the night but provide sustenance for the next day.

Although Danny’s remains open, China American Inn was one of the last remnants of the “old” Petworth. It’s closure represents the full transition from the Petworth that raised me to the Petworth that is now unfamiliar. While some are anxiously awaiting the revelation of what new hip spot on will replace China American Inn, others who were essentially raised on China A are saddened. China A was more than a hole in the wall, it was part of what made Petworth a community that will be missed and I think it deserves more than a by-line on your blog.”

“Dear PoPville,

Just a heads up about some broken windows in the Petworth neighborhood. My boyfriend was parked near the intersection of Randolph and 8th last night. Sometime after midnight, but before 5pm today his side mirror was punched/smashed up. It could’ve been from a person or a car; I’ve attached a photo (above). Nothing was stolen from the car.

On NYE a friend of a friend (so no one connected to myself or my roommates) parked in front of my house (on 8th st) and had their back window smashed out. In that case the criminal might have been tempted because something was left in the car.

If any of you park on the street it would be a good idea to keep an eye out, take things out of your car, etc. If anyone saw someone hit and run on Randolph or saw anything relating to the other incident it would be great if you could let me know.”

From a press release:

“The briefcase that held Abraham Lincoln’s handwritten notes during the Civil War returns to Washington, DC, for a six month exhibit at President Lincoln’s Cottage at the Soldiers’ Home [2nd and Upshur St, NW]. While living at the Cottage with his family during the summers of 1862, 1863, and 1864, President Lincoln carried papers in the briefcase on his daily commute to the White House. A photo album made for Tad Lincoln by the 150th Pennsylvania Volunteers, a company stationed at the Cottage during the Civil War to guard the Lincoln family, will also be on view in the exhibit. The briefcase and photo album are on loan from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, IL, and will be on display at President Lincoln’s Cottage through the end of June 2014. “Dear PoPville,

We’re excited to be a part of all the new Georgia Ave. development! Located just a block from the Petworth metro station (above Manny & Olga’s Pizza), Cardon Studios is a neighborhood music school offering Voice, Piano, and Guitar lessons. Having moved from a smaller space in Columbia Heights, we work with mostly adult students (some kids, too) in private lessons and group classes.”

“Dear PoPville,

We were woken at 4:30 this morning by knocking at our front door. A passerby noticed water spraying from below our porch and wanted to make sure we were aware of it. I ran down stairs and sure enough our basement was flooding.

In all the commotion we didn’t properly thank the fellow or get his name. I don’t know how long he was knocking, but it was several minutes at least in the freezing weather. I can’t even imagine the damage we would be dealing with if he hadn’t alerted us, but it would be substantial to say the least.

We would very much like to find our good samaritan to thank him and give him a gift card to Domku or DC Reynolds or something like that. He was walking on 7th between Upshur and Taylor around 4:30am. And he’s clearly a good egg. But that’s all we know, can you help us?”

Hopefully he is a reader!

From MPD:

“On Monday, December 16, 2013, at approximately 1120 hours, a neighbor witnessed two suspects looking into windows in the 900 Farragut Street, Northwest. The suspects entered a resident by forcing the front window. The neighbor called the police when they observed the suspect going through the window. Fourth District Officers arrived on the scene, and captured was a black male 18 year of age, with property belonging to the home. A second suspect fled and was captured; after a brief foot chase. This arrest occurred because neighbors were looking out for neighbors. As this investigation continues, the Fourth District remains committed to reducing crime and violence in our communities. Anyone with information about this crime or any other is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099 or 1-888-919-CRIME (1-888-919-2746).”

New signs went up yesterday announcing the name of the apartment building going up over the new Petworth Safeway – The Swift:

“Get with it. It’s brand new apartments right above the new Swift Safeway and just a block from the Metro in Petworth, Washington, DC. It’s the city at your feet. With panoramic views of the Washington Monument and National Cathedral—and easy access to all of DC. It’s jam-packed with amenities, from the downstairs Safeway and concierge services to a fitness center and a rooftop terrace. It’s designed to give your way of life a boost, styled with modern finishes and fully equipped with sleek appliances. It’s more than just a floor plan. It’s yours to make your own—just pick your apartment size from studios, one, and two bedrooms.”

Ed. Note the website says coming Spring 2014, but the sign out front says Summer 2014.

So I guess they hope the new nickname for the Safeway will be the Swift Safeway? I guess it’s better than Stinky Safeway

Word on the street is that these tacos are awesome. Anyone try one yet?

From their Clovest fundraising page:

“Milk Cult X Vigilante Coffee: Bangin’ Brunch-ish tacos + quality coffee + ice cream = Milk Cult Sanctuary

You probably already know Milk Cult as DC’s first motorcycle based mobile ice cream vendors (if you didn’t -you do now). Well, get excited, the duo is gearing up for their next project.

Enter: The Sanctuary.

Milk Cult’s pop-up style Cafe. They are creating a space for people to come and stay a while, where they can enjoy the highest quality of coffee, food, and soak up the Milk Cult experience. The Sanctuary will provide a full espresso bar, free wi-fi, and a full fledged savory program featuring their take on brunch-style tacos. Basing their operation out of Union Kitchen, the pop-up cafe is a springboard for Ed and Patrick’s passion for quality food in a welcoming atmosphere.”

You can read more background info here and make a loan here.

The Washington Post reported:

“The pop-up will be open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. during the week and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on weekends…does breakfast tacos ($3 apiece, or three for $9) with a twist: Scrambled eggs come atop flour tortillas with corned beef hash and arugula, or bacon and chives. Mine, with a tater-tot hash (yes!), tomatillo and a foam of lemony hollandaise, might have been the biggest departure from an actual taco, but it was tasty nonetheless.”
