“2020 marks the 30th anniversary of local retailer Proper Topper, which will commemorate the occasion with Throwback Thursday happy hours, weekly drawings, pop-up sales, and a big celebratory bash in June. What began as a hat shop in historic Union Station – drawing famous hat lovers from Fugazi to the Clintons to the Queen of England – has evolved into a thriving neighborhood institution with two locations, devoted customers, and a diverse collection of goods far beyond just hats. “Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to let you know there was some crazy shit going down at 18th and M, NW last night. People within the 1800M building received the following message.

Then the DC Fire Department told everyone to enter the building emergency shelters. Fire trucks were blocking off M St. We thought we’d be in for a long night.

Luckily, 10 minutes later we were given the all clear.

Lo and behold. This morning we find out the following from our courageous news team at Fox 5:

“All clear, sounds like someone may have pooped in the elevator.” (more…)

Looks Like Lemon Cuisine of India Quietly Closed on P Street

Lemon Cuisine of India opened back in December 2016, previously home to Crios Mexican.

Thomas reports:

“It was one of mine and my wife’s go-to take-out spots. I tried calling to place an order Monday, and got no response, figured it was just a one-off issue. They’re normally closed on Tuesdays, so when I called Wednesday night and still got no answer, I got suspicious. (more…)

I’m hosting a Happy Hour at Sorellina on Valentine’s Day on behalf of Voices on the Border, a small but mighty NGO that works on human rights and development in El Salvador. I’m a teacher and on their board of directors. We’re raising $1000 for a teacher’s salary in a small community in El Salvador. Sorellina will donate a portion of a specialty cocktail to Maria, and we’ll have a computer set up to do donations on site. Cafe Mia opens on M Street – Check Out the Menu

Ed. Note: This space was most recently home to Flipside Filipino restaurant which closed in January.

Thanks to the folks at Cafe Mia for letting us know they’ve opened and sharing their Menu (PDF) with us. “Our specialty is Peruvian style rotisserie chicken but we serve other great items as well.” They also have a Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich served on brioche for $6 :)
