The Craigslist ad says:

“Bright two bdrm and one bath apt. with roughly 990 sq ft. Lots of amenities including hardwood floors throughout, kitchen with dishwasher and lots of storage, ton of closet/storage space, south-facing balcony (comfy porch furniture included in rental), new track lighting in living room and hallway (all lighting on dimmers), new ceiling fans in the bedrooms, all windows recently replaced and zoned HV/AC wall units to help keep utility costs down.

There are new (and large) laundry facilities available for free in the building and easily accessible bike racks for easy storage and commuting.”

Does $2200 sound reasonable for this 2 bedroom?

We’ve been following the progress of this building as well as its tenants for quite a while. (No more word on Vegetate taking the second floor…) But the good news is that John Andrade of Asylum has sealed the deal on his project Meridian Pint. I spoke with John on Monday afternoon and took a quick tour of the property. First of all, the property is huge! I had no idea how large it was. Here’s what the first floor looks like:

I’m not sure if the photo properly conveys the size but it is 3000 square feet. And the basement is also 3000 square feet. So this is quite a big project. I took a look at the floor plans and the set up promises to be pretty sweet. The basement section, which will be more of a bar than restaurant, will be called The Joint Chiefs. In this space you will have 3 pool tables (available by the hour), a hand shuffle board table, and 25 American Craft beers on tap including one cask.

On the first floor, the space will feature the Restaurant – Meridian Pint. Here you will have booths, tables, a bar, and of course 25 American Craft beers on tap (there will be no bottles or cans). The menu will feature “contemporary American cuisine with an international flair”. When the weather warms up there will also be an outdoor seating patio area. They will feature a brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 9am – 3pm.

At the moment, John plans to open both spaces by early June in time for the World Cup (Soccer). During the World Cup the space will be open during lunch and will show the games. There will be four televisions in the basement space. For those that have been to Churchkey and Birch & Barley on 14th St. in Logan Circle – there is a similar layout here. The layout is similar in that there will be one space that is more of a restaurant with a bar and one space that is more of a bar that will also serve food.

One last cool aspect John told me about was some planned bicycling trips for customers. He hopes to be able to take some folks on tours of breweries and vineyards in Virginia to see where many of the beers and wines you are drinking come from.

All in all the whole project sounds pretty sweet. And now I have another reason to look forward to the World Cup. Allez Les Bleus!

These two homes, 3004 13th St. above and 2719 13th St. below, have been shells/eyesores for a quite a while. They are looking really good now. Making one of my favorite streets in the city even nicer. Which style do you like better?

“Last night around 6:30pm, the CH Giant was evacuated due to some fire alarms. Carts and baskets left strewn throughout the store. Fire Trucks came and left. I waited at Sticky Fingers for sanity to resume then moseyed back on over. I was told the store was closed due to malfunctioning sprinkler system and “too bad”. So I got my parking receipt stamped and left, sans the groceries I had spent nearly an hour collecting and then waiting to pay for in astronomical lines. On my way out of the garage I notice that all of a sudden folks are going back in to shop. This was almost immediately after a police officer and store employee told me they were closed down by the fire department. What the heck happened here?”

Anyone experience this as well?

I was surprised to learn that this was a 3 bedroom. From the outside I thought it would only have 2 bedrooms. What do you think of the renovation itself? Does $449,995 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/3bath?

“Dear PoP,

I just walked past the gorgeous mural on Irving in between 11th and 13th and noticed that some jerkwad spray painted my favorite part! I’m so pissed!

Here’s wishing that 2010 is better than 2009.”

Very upsetting. It also appears that the mural at Bloombars on nearby 11th Street was also tagged, though already fixed.

From a Bloombars Facebook message:

“Some of you may have heard the unfortunate news that the mural on the side of our space was defaced by gang tags. It is sad bit of news that everyone does not share the same appreciation for something that brought so much joy to the neighborhood.

Your gut reaction might be anger and disappointment. But we ask that you set aside those feelings and see this as an opportunity to focus attention on one of the greatest challenges facing our community—young people choosing unproductive and destructive ways to spend their time.

It begs the question: Do you believe there are enough creative and productive alternatives for young people that support their growth and development?

If your answer was no, we ask that you explore ways that you can help lend some of your time to address this challenge—A challenge that will not go away with letters to elected officials or complaints to the police.

As you know, BloomBars has been working to be a part of the solution. Our most recent efforts include programming like Guitars not Guns and Poetry in the Morning. And with your support, ideas, and resources, we hope to offer many more opportunities for youth in 2010. In addition, we would love for our space to serve as a meeting place where you can engage your neighbors in a dialog about this and other challenges facing our community, so be on the lookout for an invitation to our first organized community forum.

It’s important to note that there are also several other organizations here in Columbia Heights whose footsteps we follow, like the Latin American Youth Center, and the Emergence Community Arts Collective. We hope you will also look for ways to support these fantastic organizations.

Back to the issue of the gang tags. I’ve spoken to Joel Bergner, the muralist, who has offered to fix the damage. We’re also bouncing around ideas to create a program to introduce the youth who have been doing the tagging to art of murals. But again, these efforts can only be successful with your support.”

“We have a water main break at the 1500 block of Spring Place NW. Residents notified WASA’s emergency line at 8 PM on December 30 and have been without water since 9 PM on December 30. WASA began digging up the street at 8 AM, December 31.

It is a sewer and main line break, “very bad” in WASA’s words.”

From WASA:

“So right now, we have both a water main and sewer break. Spring Place between 16th and Perry is shut down in order to facilitate repairs. Our Water Services Foreman said that crews are working hard to restore water today.”
