I’ve mentioned these buildings on 15th Street, NW just north of Meridian Hill/Malcolm X park before. A few months ago there was some scaffolding up and I’ve eagerly been awaiting to see the results. I think it looks great. This whole property is incredible. Due to the trees it’s hard to get a picture of the entire property so these photos don’t totally do it justice…

“Dear PoP,

Just wanted to take a second to give two thumbs up for the new nail place at 14th and Park. The store is clean and pleasantly decorated, the staff know what they’re doing and are customer service oriented, and the prices are in line with DC standards ($32 for a mani/pedi). I’m sitting in the fabulous massage chair right now and couldn’t be happier! A great addition for Columbia Heights.”

Thanks to all who sent word especially this reader who also sent the photos. He writes:

“I just happened to walk by as the first fire trucks were arriving at around 1245 pm today at this fire at the Alliance of Concerned Men building at 2905 11th. There was white smoke pouring out of the building, but the firefighters had it under control within about 20 minutes. Here are pictures. As you can see around 7-10 fire trucks and probably 40 plus firefighters responded.”

A commenter writes:

“You asked not too long ago if a Columbia Heights Xmas tree would be a good idea. I personally thought it was a great idea and could lure shoppers to the neighborhood. Well the idea had its critics. Chief amoung the problems seemed to be that an Xmas tree was a religious symbol and therefore couldnt be placed in the plaza. So why then I ask. Was I walking by the plaza only to see a FULL ON NATIVITY SCENE? I for one think the tree would be a lot prettier and a much better draw.”

I think a camel in Columbia Heights is awesome!

When I posted last week that Pho Viet was opening up at 3513 14th Street, NW I thought there would be a bit more excitement given the frenzy that occurred when nearby Pho 14 opened on Park Road. I tried to go today and sadly forgot that they were closed on Mondays. So a couple questions – has anyone given them a try yet? How does it compare to Pho 14?

And props to Pho Viet for getting a proper sign:

“Dear PoP,

Just came home to the intersection Sherman Avenue and Euclid Street, around 6:45 pm (Monday night). At the intersection are five police cars with lights blazing, plus one unmarked with police plates, and a civilian car burning its four-ways. We saw the cops putting a man in fatigues into the back of one of the cars, and now there are half a dozen officers out conversing on the corner. Any info as to what’s going on in my front yard?”

MPD 3D Commander Jacob Kishter writes:

“Third District members on patrol intervened on an attempt carjacking at Sherman Ave and Euclid St, NW. One adult male was arrested without incident.”

Excellent work!

Room 11 is located at 3234 11th St, NW (at Lamont) From an email:

“Please join us on Monday, December 21st for a Winter Solstice Celebration.
Starting at 5 pm we will feature the next beer in our guest tap series,
Anderson Valley Winter Solstice Ale, an award-winning 6.9% ABV spiced
brown ale.

We’re even more excited however, about the long-awaited release of our
house-made Nocino, an Italian-style green walnut liqueur that has been
infusing since June! The complex bitter flavor of green walnuts is
softened by sugar and complemented by baking spices and lemon zest. It’s
served cold but sure to warm you up on a cold Winter’s night.”

Council Member Jim Graham sends an update of Ward 1 parks in an email:

“After the D.C. Council’s vote on Tuesday, December 14, to rescind $83 million in Parks and Recreation Contracts many of you called and wrote to me asking what that meant for Justice Park, Park View and LeDroit Park.

I am happy to report that these parks construction projects are already “back on track.” The Deputy Mayor for Economic Development has assured me that the $750K Justice Park project and the $1.2 million Park View project will be overseen by Allen Lew − Executive Director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization − and will move forward. This is excellent news given the great speed and success with which Mr. Lew has handled school renovations and constructions.

The final project, the LeDroit Park (former Gage school transformation) will remain in the Deputy Mayor’s portfolio and the contract for the reconstruction will be re-bid and move forward.”
