From a press release:

“Instacart (www.Instacart.com), the fast-growing retail delivery service whose personal shoppers hand pick and deliver items from trusted local stores, today announced a partnership with Giant Food for Washington, D.C. residents. Beginning today, Giant customers throughout Washington, D.C. – many of whom requested the grocer be added to the platform – can now order their favorite items and have them delivered straight to their doorsteps by Instacart in as little as an hour.

Instacart will continue to expand in the D.C. market and will soon have more local retailers on the platform.”

“Dear PoPville,

I shared the following message with Giant Food earlier today. It seems no matter how much sunlight we put on the conditions of their Columbia Heights store, old problems return. It would be great if you could share the post below:

Good morning,

I’ve been a resident of the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC for the past 10 years. For most of those years, I’ve lived within a block of the Giant on Park Road. Due to its convenience, it’s my primary source for groceries. While professionalism and customer service have improved dramatically in recent years, wait times are once again becoming a problem.

This was a significant problem back in 2011 that resulted in a promise to keep all lanes open during peak shopping hours. This promise has been rescinded without notice and long lines have once again returned. (more…)

A reader alleges:

“The employees of the Columbia Heights Giant (14th & Park) were ordered to come in Friday/Saturday/Sunday without any extra compensation or travel assistance. The workers I talked to ended up staying overnight at friends’ houses in the neighborhood so that they could make their shifts.

This is ridiculous.”

“Dear PoPville,

Given that P street Whole Foods is out of onions, garlic, and carrots and the line for Trader Joe’s is out the door, I thought I’d write and share my winter storm shopping secret: Streets Market at 2400 14th St NW (just north of 14th/Florida). Their produce is fully stocked and the pantry items are on par with Whole Foods. Pretty good deli counter/prepared food, too. Zero line at the check-out.”

Jason sends us the one above that really captures the oeuvre best:

“Eggs at 17th Street Safeway. @PoPville #ScrambledEggs”

Adams captures the wait:

“@PoPville Foggy Bottom Whole Foods (cashiers are upstairs; line goes downstairs)”

Michael also is able to get some of the angst:

“Pre-snow insanity in full effect at Safeway on Columbia Road NW. Line spans length of store. @PoPville”

Jonathan with another long one:

“@PoPville @capitalweather one of the 7 lines at the giant in Cleveland park that all reach the back of the store”

And things were equally grim on the de-icing front – from David:

“The shelf with de-icer at Annie’s Hardware in Petworth. @DCist @PoPville #YayWinter”

Also I hear another dusting is coming soon too…

A reader reports:

“Just wanted to let you know that Field to City, a small corner grocery store on 2nd and Rhode Island NW has closed. My GF and I have been going there for a few years to pick up high quality locally grown produce, dairy, and eggs (not to mention a huge beer selection). Talked to the owner briefly and he said it had been heading this way for a while. Sad to see the only real grocery option in Bloomingdale close.”

Field to City emails:

“I am actually taking orders by text and email, and maintain a short list of popular items that can be viewed via autoreply on my [email protected] account.”
