“Dear PoPville,

Recommendations for auto-shop following attempted car theft? A couple of juveniles tried stealing my wife’s Kia from the park and ride at Ft. Totten. It’s too old for the computer trick so after smashing a window and cracking the steering column they moved on, trying one with a club before finally being caught in a third vehicle in the lot. So I have a 2010 Kia, missing a window and wipers that won’t turn off. Wondered if anyone had recommendations for places to take it in DC for repairs…”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m in desperate need of a financial advisor who’s proficient in socially responsible investing and welcoming to first-time investors like myself who want to know what to do with the wad of cash we’ve finally been able to save that’s currently stored under our mattress. I’m also looking for a tax professional who specializes in working with U.S. residents who work abroad and application of the foreign income tax exemption.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m an owner of a condo unit in a 22-unit building that has been a condo for ~15 years (I have owned for 3.5 years). When I bought, all financial documents seemed okay and my realtor said she thought it looked fine. But after buying, some estimates for future repairs were done and it turned out that we’re very behind on reserves funding. I joined the Board and (with all of the other Board members) voted to increase the HOA fees by inflation + 10% for at least the next 3 years (this is still not enough for fixing our reserve situation, and we will need a special assessment for work needing to be done in the next few years, but it felt like a start). “Dear PoPville,

Can you please send the word out asking if any restaurant is still serving potato skins? They’re my favorite and besides the random TGIF I haven’t seen any on any menus. Also my second favorite is nachos- beef, black beans and ALL the other good stuff that evenly spread on each chip. Can you help me out??”

“Dear PoPville,

Occasionally I see reps from a variety of companies looking to install solar panels allegedly for free and wanted to know anyone’s experiences with various companies, free vs. buying, impact on utility bills, etc.

For those uninterested please enjoy some MC Solaar until our next post: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My car was hit over Christmas/new years while parked in Mt Pleasant (next to Bancroft Elementary.) The bumper was hit and damaged. I didn’t see a note at the time and turns out it had slipped down into the hood of my car so I just found it. Unfortunately I can read almost 99% of it except for 2 digits in the phone number. The most important part! Could you help me track down this mystery person? Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to bring some attention to an issue we are having in our neighborhood. A little over a year ago, our neighborhood dry cleaner moved (largely due to COVID). The small property at 1301 Florida Ave NW, which is on the ground floor of a residential four story apartment complex, was vacant for a bit. A smoke shop tried to move in but was denied by the zoning board because the store is just across the street from Cardozo high school (see photo above). (more…)

Ed. Note: If you have a photo/hi res video of that part please email me at [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with OP.

“Dear PoPville,

We were in the pit at the Springsteen concert Monday night. At about 1:30 into Bruce’s cover of Nightshift on 3/27 as Bruce was dancing on the catwalk he looked right at my wife, reached down and grabbed her hand and held it for the better part of 8 seconds while he sang right at her. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This large envelope was delivered to us late last year, and even though there is no “Benjamin C. Evans” who has lived at this address (at least since 2015) and I wrote “not at this address” on the envelope, USPS sent it back to our house. I can’t help but think that there could be something of at least sentimental value inside and would love to get it to its intended recipient.”

If you know who this is or this is you, please email me at [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with OP.

“Dear PoPville,

(TL;DR: Writing about a $500 insurance charge associated with a COVID test from Sameday Health in Georgetown – wondering if anyone else is having a similar experience.)

My previous insurance is attempting to charge me $500 for COVID test lab work from a test I took in July 2021, billed Feb 20, 2023 – nearly two years after the fact in addition to being covered under the CARES Act at the time. The insurance company claims I filed too late, but I never received any kind of documentation to submit – only an email from Sameday Health essentially saying “what you’ll get from your insurance isn’t a bill!” (more…)
