Frozen Tropics noted and a reader also sends word that the Pho Bar and Grill space on H Street is now for lease:

“Approximately 1,800 sqaure feet available for 10,500 per month plus passthrough charges. No tenant improvements needed. Restaurant on 1st floor and bar on 2nd floor. Liquor License is included. The H Street Corridor/North Capitol Hill area has established itself as one of the best submarkets in DC for the restaurants and bar business. The renaissance of H Street is exemplified by the recent Whole Foods lease announcement and the City’ s recent investment of $65M in aesthetic improvements to streetscape. Former Pho Bar Restaurant Property Type: Restaurant Available: For Lease Address: 1360 H Street NE”

In early October we noted that Pho Bar and Grill had closed for “renovation and training”.  We judged them back in Dec. 2012 (they opened in Oct. 2011.)

639 Florida Avenue, NW

Over the summer we learned a new Asian restaurant, IChing, was coming to 639 Florida Ave, NW by the Howard Theatre. I’m happy to share an update from the owner:

“The Philosophy for IChing is simple, it stands for change on how to accomplish balance, harmony, prosperity, happiness, and longevity. IChing is a teaching that combines between Taosim and Confucius wisdom dated back to 3000 B.C. Today it is known also known to be use in, what is call Feng-Shi.This area is changing very fast and I like to bring all those elements into our cooking and happiness to our community.

This has been a long project for me. We are at the construction phase. We were suppose to be due to open in fall 2013. Our plans have been delay, this building is so old. There is a lot of work to be done for the safety of patrons. We are now looking till sometime in March 2014. The poster that we had posted up was to get a vibe from the neighborhood, and it work. People are curious of the Chinese boy. The meaning of this poster is to give an idea of something ancient, and Asia. He is also waiting at the step of the front door to be unlock. This establishment will be a friendly neighborhood restaurant that you can bring your family, friends, or for a business meeting.

Our cuisine is Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Japanese. My executive chef is a born Japanese. His name his Munehiro Mori. Experince for 30 years.(Cashion’s, Raku, Asia Nora, Wolfgang Puck. His cooking introduces cross-cultural ingredients with the same spirit of innovation with a European flair. We are very exited!”

From a press release:

“In early December, Chef Frederik De Pue will host a three-day popup restaurant event at Table to give a preview of what he has planned at Menu, the three-tiered Penn Quarter concept he plans to open in January. The three-course, $45 fixed-price menu will be offered on December 9-11, and feature dishes from Menu’s third floor bistro/bar and fourth floor restaurant.

In addition to a restaurant and bistro, Menu will include a local market on the ground floor featuring produce and grocery items from local producers, craft beer, wine and pre-made meals and food items from the Menu kitchen.

De Pue will be using the December dinners to try out dishes created for Menu’s two dining concepts, including pastry dishes by new hire Jason Gehring. More than an early look at the restaurant and BistroBar, this event is an opportunity to participate in the development of Menu’s menu.

Back in mid-September we took an early look at Fainting Goat located in the former Urban Essentials space at 1330 U St, NW. Since the design team was the same one that did Boundary Stone, Red Hen and Baby Wale I had very high hopes for how it would turn out. As expected – awesome:

In mid-November we learned that Logan Hardware would be moving from 1416 P Street, NW to 1734 and 1736 14th Street, NW in July. At that time it wasn’t clear when the current occupant of 1736 14th, Point Chaud, would close. Sorry to say that Sunday night was Point Chaud’s last night on 14th just south of S Street. This officially marks the end of the crepe explosion of 2009.

From a press release:

Newton’s Noodles CEO & Executive Chef Dennis Friedman has been using his noodle: Starting December 2, 2013, his new fast-casual eatery will become DC’s one-stop-shop for the most important meal of the day. Between 7am – 10am, Monday through Friday, Friedman’s new concept will feature a breakfast menu, combining a signature dish and build-your-own options. It’s the only place in town where breakfast is made fresh-to-order right in front of the guest.

The breakfast menu stays true to the restaurant’s informal dining atmosphere through personalized bites. The build-your-own omelette or scramble ($2.99) allows breakfast-goers to customize their meal with a pick of three fresh vegetables, including bell peppers, bean sprouts and asparagus. Bacon, sausage, and cheese are add-ons that round out the food groups. For a more hearty option, the bespoke breakfast can be put on a bagel or croissant for an additional $1.50. Potatoes, bacon and sausage are available as sides. Guests can also opt for Friedman’s signature Loco Moco ($4.75): white or brown rice, an option of bacon, sausage, or turkey sausage and topped with a sunny-side-up egg. Pair coffee with the signature Pattycake, created by Friedman’s wife Patty, for a sweeter take on breakfast.”
