1140 19th Street, NW

Back in May we learned a lot more about the GRK Fresh coming to 19th Street by Science Club:

“Among its select classic quick serve menu selections is GRK’s signature Yeero, as well as fresh, authentic Greek yogurt. Spelled phonetically to differentiate this signature classic Greek dish from the traditional gyro, GRK’s Yeero features meat seasoned and marinated in yogurt, and slow roasted by artisans in a rotisserie grill. The straightforward menu offers choice of lamb & beef, chicken, pork or vegetables served on a classic pita baked in wood stove oven or served on a plate. To top it off, GRK offers three distinct, yogurt-based tzatzikis: classic and zesty GRK, spicy kaftero, or basil infused prassino. Entrée salads or side choices like the Aegean slaw with red and green cabbage, carrots, onions and fresh herbs dressed in lemon vinaigrette are also offered. Everything on the menu uses the best local as well as international ingredients the market has to offer.”

It’ll actually be two levels with seating and ordering upstairs and more seating downstairs and on the front patio. I’m told they should be open in about three weeks and this is the first of 8-10 more coming (likely 4 in DC proper). You can check out their full menu here.

There was a lot of judging going on before they even opened so I’ll be interested to hear what folks think now that they’ve actually been open for a bit. Any fans?

Also they write:

“Just in time for summer, Washington, DC’s only grilled cheese-centric restaurant GCDC is excited to open its new 16-seat patio on the bustling Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just a block from the White House. From a press release:

“On July 3, acclaimed chef Jose Garces unveils Rural Society, an Argentine steakhouse at the Loews Madison Hotel. The restaurant’s name draws inspiration from La Sociedad Rural Argentina, the Argentine Rural Society, which for over a century has hosted an annual agricultural and livestock show: La Exposición Rural. Rural Society reflects the convergence of rural traditions brought to the bustling, cosmopolitan city. Greeting guests upon entry is a wood-fired grill that enlivens the restaurant and evokes the traditional parrilla cuisine of South America.

“I’ve always had the urge to explore Argentine cuisine, particularly the parrilla aspect that’s so ingrained in the culture. We want the fire to be a presence, the way it was during so many of our experiences during our trip to Argentina. We’re going to cook as much as we can over that flame,” says Chef Jose Garces.

To begin the meal, Rural Society offers Fiambres, or Argentine charcuterie, like thinly sliced Bresaola de Wagyu with a spicy kick of carrot mustard, red watercress, and charred focaccia. Feast on classics from the Tradicionales section, including Provoleta, a smoky, grilled aged provolone sandwich with peppery arugula, oregano and aji picante.

Fresh from the flames emerge top quality cuts of domestic and imported meat and fish Desde la Parrilla. From turf to surf, guests can graze on selections such as grass-fed Uruguayan rib-eye and prime dry-aged NY strip or Jidori free-range chicken and jumbo cardinal prawns, all served with house-made accompaniments including salsa criolla, merkén aioli and chimichurri. Verduras, or vegetables, are similarly flame-fresh and include Zanahorias, wood-grilled carrots with thyme, fennel seed, and whipped goat cheese.

Celebrating the blend of Argentinian and Italian cultures that is prevalent in Buenos Aires due to a wave of Italian immigration that began in the 19th century, Rural Society rounds out the menu with house-made pasta like the Sorrentino, ham and cheese ravioli tossed in Parmesan cream, and Fugazza, or thick-crust Argentine pizzas.

On the beverage side, Rural Society offers an extraordinary range of South American wine, with more than half of the wines by the glass hailing from Argentina, in addition to an extensive collection of 75 whiskeys and 25 Italian Aperitifs. Specialty cocktails are inspired from both Argentine and Uruguayan classics, incorporating locally popular ingredients such as the bitter and aromatic Fernet Branca, which is infused with orange Yerba Mate tea to make a Gintonic. For beer lovers, South American selections include Quilmes (Argentina), Pacena (Bolivia) and Xingu (Brazil). Happy hour will be hosted daily from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. continues after the jump. From a press release:

“Mixologists and brothers Ari and Micah Wilder, along with their partners Armin Amin and Adrian Williams, are pleased to announce the July anticipated opening of Chaplin Restaurant & Bar at 1501 9th Street, NW, 20001. Chaplin is a nod to Sir Charles Spencer “Charlie” Chaplin, an English actor, comedian and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin Restaurant & Bar will be serving up Asian-inspired cuisine that will take diners on a journey to Japan and Shanghai in the 1920s, when muted films were appreciated globally for embracing and unifying separation thru emotion, expression, comedy, originality, risk, sorrow and entertainment.

Chaplin’s partners recently tapped Jeremy Cooke to be the executive chef overseeing Chaplin’s kitchen and opening menu, which will combine the Wilder brothers’ love of spirits and Jeremy Cooke’s well-honed skill creating handmade noodles, dumplings, ramen and family-style roasts. Those over 21 can partake in Chaplin’s selection of “drunken” dumplings. Menu prices range from $6 to $12 for dumplings and salads and start at $10 for all bowls of ramen. (more…)

“Delicatessen After Dark is back. The fourth monthly cocktail club– Summer in the Catskills– will take place on Thursday, June 26th from 8pm to late at the DGS Bar. Come imbibe on $10 specialty cocktails with our extraordinary Bar Man Brian Zipin.

New York Jews spent their summers in the Catskill’s drinking by the pool, serenaded by legendary Jazz musicians and hectored by foul mouthed comedians. These summer oases in the Alleghenies shaped much of our drinking culture today.

Delicatessen After Dark is a celebration of the new delicatessen drinking culture inspired by our grandparent’s long nights in Lower East side taverns, winter getaways to Florida and jazzy escapades to the Catskills.

Back in April we learned that Creme and their famous chicken and waffles brunch would be returning to 14th Street in June and they were pretty close – opening Tuesday July 1st – from an email:

“We’re excited to announce Creme Restaurant & Bar, formerly of U St, will be opening on Tuesday, July 1st at our new location in Columbia Heights!”

Their website says:

“Creme Restaurant & Bar is a premier casual fine dining destination for all to enjoy in the heart of DC.

With 10 years of service to the District, and a restaurant in Baltimore, Creme is known for blending award-winning food, amazing service and a friendly, comfortable family-owned atmosphere.

Tegist “Teggy” Ayalew joined the restaurant business in 1996 but the concept of Creme was created in 2004 when construction began on her U Street location.

With amazing dishes like chicken and waffles and DC’s booming brunch culture, Creme Cafe & Lounge quickly became the go-to restaurant in uptown DC.

From 2005 to 2013, Creme resided on U Street with Teggy’s son, Ezra, becoming the manager in 2010. With the success of the DC location, Teggy and Ezra were able to open Creme Restaurant & Lounge, previously known as CR Lounge, in Baltimore’s Mt. Vernon neighborhood the same year.

On October 31, 2013, Creme officially closed its doors due to the construction and development of the U Street Corridor. Creme would later announce plans to move to 14th Street NW inside the new luxury apartment building of Capitol View on 14th. Its new location in the LEED Platinum Certified building is directly in line with Ezra’s beliefs of living a green lifestyle and creating sustainability and awareness in our environment.

Ezra believes that “green living is not a fad as it’s something that has to happen.”

With a water heater that conserves water, LED lights and recycled wood, Ezra’s landscape architecture background has come in handy when trying to create a more sustainable restaurant in Creme.

Ezra’s end goal for Creme is to consistently provide good food for Washington DC, promote the idea of eating local and supporting small businesses. He believes that “awesome food isn’t just a fad – it’s a living” and that the DC food scene deserves a quality casual fine dining experience in restaurants and event services.”
