While it was sad to learn of the Islander’s closure the replacement, Archipelago, looks freaking amazing especially if you want to be transported out of the District for a few hours. The details are just everywhere. And they are awesome. They’ll be soft opening this weekend and having a proper opening Tuesday and they’ll be open Tuesdays-Sundays from 5pm-close. You gotta check it out for yourself. This is another one of those wild transformations if you remember what the inside of the Islander looked like. Also, did I mention the shrine to Magnum PI…

Update: “The bad news they are closing this Monday, the 29th.”
“Dear PoPville,
I caught wind today that one of our beloved neighborhood bagel shops, Bagels and Baguettes, will be closing quite abruptly in about a months time. It sounds like the landlord will not be renewing the lease, thus forcing them out.
Bagels and Baguettes of District Of Columbia, DC has been part of the Capitol Hill neighborhood since 1996. We specialize in variety of authentically made bagels (kettle boiled) as well as pastries, baguette sandwiches, and salads that are all prepared on site. We also serve premium coffee, espresso drinks and smoothies.
I was wondering if anyone has heard any additional information. I also wanted to raise awareness because I believe it’s a gem in our community, and I’m sure others feel the same.
I know that they are working quickly to try and find a new location around the same area so, if anyone has any leads or connections, I would encourage you to reach out.”

Nice – the former Pinkberry space (and don’t forget Pampillonia Jewelers represented here for many years before that) is going to become a second location for Buredo who opened their first “Burrito-size sushi rolls” spot at 825 14th Street, NW over the summer. Ed. Note: 825 14th Street, NW used to be a Yogenfruz. God willing Buredo will take over all the former frozen yogurt spots in the city! For those not familiar their website says:
“Buredo (pronounced “bur-EE-doh”) is a local DC establishment, owned by two life-long childhood friends and DC natives who were looking for a unique, fresh lunch option. Our handheld, burrito-size sushi rolls feature Asian and other globally-inspired ingredients and flavors. Using seasoned rice and traditional nori, we roll our sushi burritos to order – perfect for the health-conscious crowd on the go looking for some good, clean eating with a twist.
We use the highest-quality, all-natural ingredients (no artificial dyes or flavors here) which we prepare daily to roll a fresh, hearty and flavor-packed sushi burrito. Veggies play a starring role as well – we are passionate about letting them shine through their natural flavors and textures, and love to pack a punch with pickling too.
Buredo is bringing a new way of eating sushi to the nation’s capital. Always remember to eat your veggies, eat more fish and eat Buredo!”
And you can check their menu here too.

From a press release:
“Sakerum, a new sushi bar, Asian-Latin restaurant and cocktail lounge, will open just blocks away from the intersection of 14th and U Street (2204 14th St NW) this spring. Owner Stephanos Andreou’s vision for the two-story, 3,300-square-foot resto-lounge is based on the Japanese concept of the izakaya, a warm, welcoming gastropub, tinged with the flair of a Latin lounge.
The first floor will house Sakerum’s colorful sushi bar, led by chef Khan Gayabazar, formerly of Fujimar and Maté. The second floor boasts a retractable, glass rooftop, which will accommodate up to 90 guests. Sakerum’s menu of sushi and Latin-inspired Asian dishes will offer an exciting blend of flavors and cultures based on innovative recipes.
Mixologist Gina Chersevani, of Union Market’s Buffalo & Bergen, is responsible for Sakerum’s beverage program, which will produce fresh sugar cane on-site for cocktails and drink flights. Chersevani’s cocktail menu will perfectly complement Chef Gayabazar’s fare, and guests will enjoy both in an environment that is upscale and warm. (more…)
