“I walked by 1409 14th St. earlier today (former Playbill Cafe) and saw the owners of the new restaurant putting up their signage. The new restaurant’s name is Da Hong Pao Restaurant. They hope to open at the end of the month or in early June. No website yet. It’ll be nice to finally see something in this space.”

Back in February we learned that Buredo’s “Burrito-size sushi rolls” was coming to a second location in the former Pinkberry space. The first spot which opened last summer is located at 825 14th Street, NW. I stopped in to inquire about the Dupont space and was told they should be open in “4-5 weeks”. Sweet.

“Dear PoPville,
FYI, Eatonville Inc. (owner of Mulebone at Union Row, 2121 14th St NW) is seeking to terminate the Settlement Agreement it signed with a former Union Row resident in 2009. Eatonville Inc. claims that because the former resident was the “sole beneficiary” of the agreement, and the resident has since moved away, the restaurant should be able to terminate the agreement.
The Settlement Agreement requires: (1) emphasis on food with limited live entertainment, (2) any live music must only be audible inside the restaurant and must end by 10pm, (3) maintenance of a security plan, (4) outdoor patio must close by midnight, (5) reasonable efforts to eliminate rat infestation, (6) signs advising patrons of capacity limits and the residential nature of the neighborhood, and (7) encouragement for patrons to use public transit or park in public garages rather than on residential streets. Mulebone’s current liquor license class is C-Restaurant.
There is a hearing on Eatonville Inc.’s request for termination of the Settlement Agreement on June 13, 2016. Anyone who’d like to appear before the board to protest the request must file a petition or request to appear before May 31, 2016. Notice of the hearing, and a copy of Eatonville Inc’s request, are attached. (more…)

From a press release:
“Tiffany MacIsaac, Pastry Chef/Owner of Buttercream Bakeshop, is pleased to announce the opening of her first storefront, located at 1250 9th Street, NW in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC.
The bakery is a culmination of a yearlong quest by the award-winning pastry chef to find the perfect flagship location for Buttercream Bakeshop. During that time, MacIsaac has been busy creating exquisite, custom wedding cakes and special occasion sweets that have been available since August 2014 by delivery and at select pop-up events in the DC metro area.
Mornings at Buttercream Bakeshop will bring an array of signature breakfast items, such as the Buttercream Breakfast Bun, scrambled eggs with sharp cheddar and breakfast sausage rolled in milk bread, Buttercream Bakeshop’s take on a breakfast sandwich. The shop will also feature an array of Flakies, rich and buttery round croissant-style pastry in classic (rolled in sugar) or with seasonal fillings, such as passion fruit, chocolate, almond, and Nutella. Buttercream Bakeshop’s Cinnascone is expected to be a crowd-pleaser; the buttermilk scone dough is treated like a cinnamon roll, filled with a mixture of butter, sugar and cinnamon, and topped with a cinnamon sugar glaze. “Dear PoPville,
Not exactly a DC staple, but ZZ Pizza & Kabob on North Cap and P recently closed its doors as the North Cap revitalization continues. I don’t think it will be missed by many. Any idea what might be going in?”
Ed. Note: ZZ Pizza & Kabob opened up back in June 2010. Updates when we learn who takes over the space.
