Thanks to Kim Coates for sending:

“former Ten 01 space is rebranding to Ben’s upstairs”

Ben’s Upstairs Website says:

“At Ben’s Upstairs you can savor delicious Southern-influenced cuisine with a hint of Caribbean flavors”

Check out their Menus here.

Ed. Note: TEN 01 opened back in Nov. 2015.

Looks like Ben’s Upstairs (which makes sense since the original U Street location has a Ben’s Next Door) was the original plan – when you look at an old photo from 2014:

Amsterdam
1829 M Street, NW

Last week I shared some scuttlebutt about Amsterdam Falafel potentially coming to the House of Kabob space on M Street when they close in October. While nothing is in stone I am happy to say that Amsterdam Falafel confirms that they are looking at that space. They’d also be interested in your feedback for those that work, live in the neighborhood – if they do take over the space would you like to see them have daytime and nighttime hours?

From an email:

“A few other specific features of this location:
– We are open 7 days a week

– We will be offering delivery to the Navy Yard, SW Waterfront and Capitol Hill areas

– There will be outdoor seating

– We will be serving beer and wine

– In line with our “people, planet, profit” mantra, our interior dining room wall is made of reclaimed/repurposed wood, specifically we used the wood from all of the crates that transported our equipment. We also built all of our dining tables out of old doors.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word that Quara Ethiopian has opened in the old Felix/NYNY Diva space. Quara’s website says:

“Quara Ethiopian Restaurant is named for the ancient civilization where the modern-day country of Ethiopia is situated – and for the city of Quara, Ethiopia. True to our roots, we prepares traditional recipes from our homeland. Your food is served by first- and-second generation Ethiopians in Washington. Our culture is represented throughout by posters, paintings and music from Africa.

And our menu features many traditional Ethiopian favorites, including Kitfo, a raw beef dish that one that many Westerners are reluctant to try, but then find quite enjoyable!”

Check out their menu here.

The owner of Boulangerie Christophe sends us an update on the new bakery coming next door to the former Commander Salamander space now an M & T Bank on Wisconsin:

“The building permit took a little longer than we hoped but all is on track now. We should be opening sometime at the beginning of November this year.

Our pastry chef, Christophe Roux just arrived from France and his son Benjamin third generation baker arrives at the end of the month.

Christophe has a two bakery’s in La Croix-Valmer, a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in southeastern France.

The goal is to bring the taste and the feel of South of France to the heart of Georgetown.”

“Johnny Spero’s first menu at Columbia Room will launch on October 4.”

Spero will collaborate with head bartender JP Fetherston, owner Derek Brown, and the rest of the Columbia Room team on the food menus for the bar’s eponymous Tasting Room, Spirits Library and Punch Garden.
