2406 18th Street, NW

Thanks to a reader for sending word that Quara Ethiopian has opened in the old Felix/NYNY Diva space. Quara’s website says:

“Quara Ethiopian Restaurant is named for the ancient civilization where the modern-day country of Ethiopia is situated – and for the city of Quara, Ethiopia. True to our roots, we prepares traditional recipes from our homeland. Your food is served by first- and-second generation Ethiopians in Washington. Our culture is represented throughout by posters, paintings and music from Africa.

And our menu features many traditional Ethiopian favorites, including Kitfo, a raw beef dish that one that many Westerners are reluctant to try, but then find quite enjoyable!”

Check out their menu here.

Phew. I had been panicking over the lack of the lack of Ethiopian restaurants in the neighborhood and in the city;-). Just kidding, I wish the place well.

There used to be _multiple_ Ethiopian restaurants on that stretch of 18th Street NW (Meskerem, Red Sea, maybe another that I’m forgetting). This is just (partially) restoring the balance.

I feel like this building is cursed.

I feel like it should remain cursed until they pull off that horrible facade.

Is the demand for Ethiopian food really that great?

    • AMDCer

Considering that DC has the largest Ethiopian community in the United States, maybe.

+1 – Most of the Ethiopian places look empty along 18th street. I don’t understand how another one will survive
