Ed. Note: I’m gonna share this comment from Irving Streete left after the champagne lounge post because it is amazing.

“Sometimes I feel as though I’m living in (or ubering towards) Wiemar Germany or one of Gatsby’s parties — a glorious burst of self-conscious decadence before the whole house of cards collapses. I guess there’s nothing to do except put my assets into overseas gold, decide between Beluga and Ossetra, and see what vintages of Grand Dame they have on the fizz list. Maybe buy a cake to leave out for the peasants on the way home.”

Ed. Note too: Don’t get me wrong, if I had $375 or really $750 floating around, I’d be here in a heartbeat. Damn you daycare for two…

From a press release:

“Only 30 seats are available for this exclusive al fresco dinner set beneath Masseria’s enchanting pergola. The dinner is $375 per person, all-inclusive, and will begin at 7PM. Come raise a glass to a good harvest!

The Italian wine harvest gets underway in early autumn, and to celebrate this event that is so central to Italian gastronomy, Chef Nicholas Stefanelli is establishing an annual Harvest Dinner at Masseria, that will showcase a different Italian winemaker each year. The inaugural Harvest Dinner will take place Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in partnership with the venerable Antinori Estate.

1212 U Street, NW

Alphonse opened with great anticipation after a major renovation back in August 2014. This was the spot from one of the owners of Russia House and Biergarten Haus. Thanks to all who sent @PoPville tweets. Were there any other fans?

Thanks to Mike Levine for sending:

“RIP Alphonse on U Street. You were one of my favs — yet so few got to know you.”

Tim Fegan also notes that Nonna’s Kitchen closed upstairs as well:

Nice progress at Soapstone Market:

“an urban grocery and bar with indoor and outdoor cafe seating, will feature prepared foods, grab and go items, baked goods, butcher, seafood and deli counters, an espresso and coffee bar, a beer and wine bar and a fast casual concept where customers can pick from daily offerings to dine in or take away”

There has been this much anticipation in Van Ness since Elvis Presley stopped by the WMAL studios…

Ed. Note: I am aware that not everyone likes Taylor Gourmet. But there are many others who do like them. Alas there is good news – you are under no obligation to eat there! Apologies for not making that clear last time. Having said all that – I do enjoy the debates over the quality of the bread.

Great news for Masseria fans and/orSW Waterfront residents from the Washington Post:

“The chef is still working out the details, but he expects the first floor to include a butcher shop, cheese counter and bakery where patrons will be able to buy fresh pasta and other prepared foods such as ragu. The second floor will house an 80-seat trattoria, an Italian eatery that focuses on the country’s southern cuisine and features an a la carte menu of pasta, antipasti, meats and cheeses. The third floor will include a rooftop bar and private dining space for up to 80 people.”

Stay tuned for Spring 2018.
