Ben's
10th and H Street, NE

Thanks to Kim Coates for sending:

“former Ten 01 space is rebranding to Ben’s upstairs”

Ben’s Upstairs Website says:

“At Ben’s Upstairs you can savor delicious Southern-influenced cuisine with a hint of Caribbean flavors”

Check out their Menus here.

Ed. Note: TEN 01 opened back in Nov. 2015.

Looks like Ben’s Upstairs (which makes sense since the original U Street location has a Ben’s Next Door) was the original plan – when you look at an old photo from 2014:

I’m really bummed about this. We live around the corner and really liked Ten01. They took most of my favorite (vegetarian) dishes off the menu.

  • Kingman Park It

I thought that Ten01 was legitimately terrible, so here’s to hoping this is better.

  • LOL, that was fast. We only attempted to eat there once, when we got some promotional 25% or something, and of course when we showed up it was closed for a private event. Nothing about it inspired wanting to return for full price.

I visited Ten01 for brunch and my boyfriend mistakenly called them “Ben’s Upstairs” while speaking with the bartender. She quickly corrected him and said “we are under the same ownership but not a part of the chain”. I honestly think they did the change so that future patrons could clearly identify the link to Ben’s. Side note: The food during brunch wasn’t that great. I really wanted to go in after the H-Street Festival this weekend but it was jammed packed. I hope they do well.

This seems like a weird move. My impression was that Ten01 was actually doing better than the actual Ben’s, which is always empty. So I’m not sure why making the tie-in explicit would help anything. I like the food, especially that shrimp dip, but man is their service terrible. Doubt that will change under the “re-branding”.

The vibe will hopefully be similar to Ben’s next door. Can never have enough good places to grab a drink and watch a game on that part of H ST IMO.
