MPint

From John Andrade owner of Meridian Pint (11th and Park Rd, NW), Brookland Pint ( 716 Monroe St, NE), Smoke & Barrel (2471 18th St, NW):

“As a Latino business owner I stand in solidarity with all of my immigrant staff. Therefore, I will close all my kitchens this Thursday in support of their desire and right to protest the evolving state of immigration policies in our country. Our bars will remain open and our guests are welcome to BYOF (bring your own food.)”

Thanks to a reader for passing on from a local supplier:

“As you may be aware, there are “A Day Without Immigrants” strikes taking place across the country. There is talk that our area may also see a form of strike on Thursday 16th February.

With this is mind, we are encouraging our clients to double up their orders on Tuesday for delivery on Wednesday, as our Thursday deliveries may experience delays.”

sylvan bakery

Thanks to all who emailed the good news! Nick writes:

Sylvan Bakery opened this morning! Their selection looked great and seem to have some pretty promising savory breakfast items. Also, they’re open at 7:00 am for my fellow Bloomingdale residents who leave for work before 8. Wishing them the best of luck.

I only got the pastry/bagel case (photo above) there’s another case with sweets and a wall of bread…”

NKOTB 2.0 at Mess Hall

From a press release:

“Last summer’s NKOTB (New Kitchens On The Block) event gave diners an exclusive chance to try signatures bites and sips from Marjorie Meek-Bradley’s Smoked & Stacked, Colada Shop, Matt Baker’s Gravitas, and Cathal Armstrong’s Kaliwa, and other restaurants before they opened. It was such a huge hit that we said, “Let’s Do It Again.”

NKOTB 2.0 will be “Hangin’ Tough” at Mess Hall (703 Edgewood St NE) on Sunday, March 19, 2017 for two separate two-hour sessions: 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m.

Diners will have an unrepeatable opportunity to sample signature menu items from 11 new ventures with the “Right Stuff” prior to their openings, including: (more…)

At long last a replacement for Fire Lake Grill?

Before Fire Lake, this was a Ruby Tuesdays. And for a hot second it looked like Guapo’s would be moving here. Updates if/as construction progresses.

kolache

From an email:

“This Saturday Republic Kolache will be bringing back the King Cake Kolache (our collaboration with Chef David Guas) for the Mardi Gras season. Last year this ended up being a fairly massive hit (both weekends we sold them were record sales days– & the second weekend we ran through over 1100 kolaches at American Ice in a couple hours!)

We’ll be selling them at our Hill Country popup this Sat & Sun (8-11a), then each Fri-Sun after that up through Mardi Gras weekend (i.e. last day 2/26).

They’ll go for $4/ea. Given the mayhem last year we’re recommending that folks pre-order to make sure we don’t sell out!”

ramen world 3

From a press release:

“SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26TH
ROUND 1 from NOON – 2:00PM //\\ ROUND 2 from 3:00PM – 5:00PM

DC Ramen Revolutionaries Return, With New DC Artisans Added to the Line-Up.

Mess Hall Washington DC’s premiere food incubator based in Edgewood, is pleased to present ‘Ramen World 3.’

Once a year, Mess Hall opens its event space AND its private kitchens to host DC’s favorite Asian food concepts. The uniquely designed space enables attendees to go behind the scenes and enjoy dishes that are prepared hot and fresh in front of them, as ramen should be served.

“We take a bunch of hot restaurants with hard-to-get reservations and long lines, and we put them under one roof; but that’s only half the story,” said Al Goldberg, founder of Mess Hall. “Next, we identify a bunch of up-and-comers and put them right alongside the big names. This embodies our core values, we are constantly finding new ways to help launch talented chefs. The result: emerging concepts catch the buzz and sometimes, they even create the most popular dishes of the day. Flash back to Ramen World 1 which featured a fledgling Thip Khao. Likewise, Ramen World 2 gave DC its very first slurp of Bantam King and a sneak preview of Toli Moli. We do what we can to broaden the DC food scene; that involves connecting chefs, restaurants, Mess Hall’s producers, and he public.”

Ramen World 3 will highlight an incredible new lineup.
