Well I’ve never heard of Gayot but it’s always nice for a local spot to get national recognition. They write:

“…it’s really one of a kind in DC, for no other place dares to tread where this eatery goes: Swedish waffles may be a breakfast option, possibly smoked Baltic sprats for lunch or dinner, or maybe a bison burger or pirogi in two different variations—the one filled with cheese also contains little-seen buckwheat.”

Domku is located at 821 Upshur St, NW.

Matisse is located at 4934 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. I don’t get up to this location too often but I was really intrigued by the responses from the nearby Le Chat Noir restaurant. Matisse seems like it has similar potential if a bit higher end. You can see their menus here. It kinda blends into the block so it’s easy to walk by without even knowing it’s there. Is this a (sorta) hidden gem?

Back in the day the owners of the old Maggie Moos at 1301 U Street, NW asked PoPville readers to name the new spot. You guys came up with U Scream Ice Cream and it always makes me smile when I walk past that sign.

Now, I’m happy to report that they will soon be offering crepes.

And thanks to a reader for sending in the above photo.

Ed. Note: Ever since I saw the Larry David Sandwich episode on Curb Your Enthusiasm it has been a dream of mine to have a PoP sandwich. I can’t believe it but that dream has come true. I can now die happy.

Obviously the important thing here is that now we will soon be able to get crepes on U Street. And stay tuned for Point Chaud to open at 14th just south of S Street, NW. (Remember the other crepe place that was supposed to come to 14th and S is now becoming a burger spot.)

“Dear PoP,

I don’t know if you have addressed this, but the restaurant Seafood & Things on Upshur is still closed despite it’s door placard stating it would reopen after the Christmas holiday.

I walked by today and to my surprised found a yellow tabby napping on the counter INSIDE…see pictures…
My concerns are 1)is the restaurant permanently closed and 2) is someone feeding/caring for the cat???”

Perhaps they have gone the way of nearby Beveragemania open one day and closed the next. Does anyone know if they have permanently closed? For the record I’ve had a pretty good crab cake sandwich from them. I’m not sure if seeing a cat in there is a good sign or a bad sign…

Seafood & Things is located at 847 Upshur Street, NW.

Thanks to a reader for the heads up:

“It appears a new pho place will be opening at 608 H St NW, according to DC Register. It looks like they’ll be applying for a liquor license and will be open til 3 am!”

The liquor application says:

“NATURE OF OPERATION
Asian and Vietnamese cuisine. 65 seats and total capacity load of 65 on first floor and
storage on the second floor.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Thursday 9 am – 2 am and Friday & Saturday 9 am – 3 am”

And speaking of Pho a reader has some veggie Pho news from Pho Viet (3513 14th Street, NW):

“I’m a regular at Pho Viet. Nina and Mike are really great people and have put a lot of work into their restaurant and I’m dying for them to succeed. They spent a year renovating that basement and they’re some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that they added veggie pho to their menu and they have a chicken pho too (with beef broth). When you originally posted about them, there were a few commenters who wanted veggie pho.”

Wow, this is very sad news. Polly’s was located at 1342 U Street, NW and was one of the first “new” cafes/restaurants to go into U Street. Just in from a reader:

“Tried to go to Polly’s this weekend — turns out they have closed! Tragedy! Do you have any information on this terrible, terrible occurrence?”

And it is confirmed on their Web site:

“Polly’s has closed.
We miss you already.
Check back here soon for a personal note…”

This is really shocking news.

1238 H Street, NE

As always, on a scuttlebutt post it is not confirmed but I believe this news has a high likelihood to be accurate. In other words I didn’t just hear this from a random lady at the grocery store… One more caveat is that I’m not exactly sure that this is the correct building. It could be another one from the 1200 block of H Street, NE. So here’s exactly what I heard – the owner of the bar Wisdom (which incidentally we just checked out a couple of weeks ago) has purchased a property next to Granville Moore’s located at 1238 H Street, NE. I hear that he is going to lease out the lower level to Granville Moore’s and the top level will host a bar, presumably similar to the style of Wisdom.

Again I’m not sure if this means The Martini Lounge will no longer exist or if it is a different building. I promise to update with more info as it becomes available. But this is the fun of running a blog – I can share with you interesting rumors as I hear them. I do believe this rumor will turn out to be true but like all scuttlebutt you have to take it with a grain of salt.

Capital City Diner will open Tuesday at 1050 Bladensburg Road, NE. This is the place they brought down from upstate NY. There was a soft opening this weekend and I think I’m still full from Friday night. Of course I did have the “Super Happy Fat Boy Breakfast”. And it lived up to the name, I was super happy and most definitely fat:

This is a great little spot. And it is indeed small. It probably can fit 20 at the counter and there were maybe 6 or 8 booths. The staff was super friendly and you really feel like you’re back in the 50s with the old school decor.

It’s a little bit of a walk from the H St, NE bustle but definitely worth a trip for an authentic diner experience. I only wish they opened a bit closer to where I live…
