From a press release:

Mockingbird Hill (1843 7th Street NW), the James Beard Award-nominated sherry and ham bar led by premier spirits expert Derek Brown, will close for the duration of the summer, beginning Sunday, June 26, to undergo remodeling.

Design and architecture firm Edit Lab at Streetsense, which recently rebuilt Brown’s Columbia Room to much acclaim, will re-envision Mockingbird Hill as a cocktail bar, continuing to offer sherry by the glass and hand-carved ham, but with a major expansion of its cocktail program. (more…)

La Jambe legit. How so? In the El Solian way of “A Real Mexican Restaurant Run by Real Mexicans Cooking in the Kitchen”. The owner is French and she has created a spectacular space. Spectacular I say because of the details which you’ll see in the photos after the jump. But I can say it’s very hard to turn a totally new construction into a warm, cool, comfortable spot to hang out. Happily La Jambe has done it (and they weren’t even 100% finished when I stopped by to take some preview photos last week.)

IMG_5494

In addition to wine, you may recall, La Jambe will also feature Charcuterie & Fromagerie. I’m told for the menu you can expect:

“several “mise en bouche” starters including olives with herbes de provence, mortadella salad, and house made rillettes. We’ll be arranging several boards pairing Europe’s finest charcuterie and lots of tasty French cheese. There will also be sandwiches featuring those same charcuterie and cheeses on freshly made French baguettes, and for dessert, we’ll be doing a café/thé/vin gourmand, where your drink of choice is served with three mini-desserts.”

Standby for a 5pm opening this Thursday at 7th and Q St, NW across the street from Dacha. I haven’t been this excited about a wine bar opening since Cork kicked things off way back in the day (RIP Sparky’s) on 14th Street.

From an email:

“4Daysx3Nights x 30Kids x 20Years = A Million Memories

Every year for the past 19 years on the first Monday after school lets out, the staff and friends of Madam’s Organ Blues Bar in Washington D.C. take 30 kids from the tougher side of Adams Morgan to Dewey Beach, Delaware. A big swimming pool, boating excursions, clamming and catching crabs, cook-outs, surf, sun and a beach bonfire? It sounds like everyone’s dream!!

And for 4 days every year the kids are living that dream!!”

From an email:

“We worked long and hard with our ANC reps to reach a settlement agreement that would be beneficial to both the neighborhood and the bar. There are only a few items that will really affect people. The first is that we will have limited hours. Monday through Thursday 6pm-10pm (until school is out for the summer then we can open at 5pm – this is actually an ABRA rule when a bar is located across from a school), Friday 6pm-12am, Saturday 4pm-12am and Sunday 4pm -10pm. We’ll probably open earlier on weekends if there is a demand.

IMG_0202

The next item is that we agreed we would have a seated only patio. There was a concern about this space being a densely populated “beer garden” on the residential side of our building. So we will have a limited number of seats (33) and will only serve seated patrons, but we’ll have table service to make it easier for everyone. The patio will be non-smoking. This will prevent our indoor patrons from coming outside to hang out and smoke. So we will ask everyone to smoke outside in the front of the building where we have provided a smoking pole for cigarette butts. (more…)

Last week I mentioned that no matter how hard you try you can not stop the winds of change. And sometimes that’s OK. Owners Patrick and Kim have been operating the bar and restaurant for coming on 23 years. And 23 years in Adams Morgan, surviving all the ups and downs is really 46 years. As I said last week, this place was really special to me. And it was really special to many others. It was a neighborhood bar for a neighborhood that didn’t really have a neighborhood bar (no offense to Millie & Al’s, RIP) when they opened in ’95 (Little Fountain opened a couple years earlier in ’93.) Anyway why was this spot so special to me and many others? Like any good neighborhood, it is because of the people. And the people came because of Patrick and Kim.

Patrick looking wistful remembering the good times and the tough times but mostly the good times

Now this may sound a bit ridiculous – but Patrick is a little bit like ‘the most interesting man in the world’ from those beer commercials. And when you’re incredibly interesting you attract an incredibly interesting clientele. And bike messengers. I kid, I kid. But seriously some of those bike messengers were crazy. Hell almost every regular in that place was a bit crazy. (more…)
