Looking towards 108 Rhode Island Ave, NW

In September 2018 El Camino closed after a four year stay in Bloomingdale (near Boundary Stone.) Well, I got some promising scuttlebutt for fans – I hear it’s reopening in a few weeks!! Word on the street is that there will be a new menu but the name will stay the same and it’ll still be Mexican. STAY TUNED.

Yesterday we learned that Meiwah would be closing May 14 after 20 years at 1200 New Hampshire Ave, NW at M Street.

Well it’s not a lot, and again, it falls outside of my traditional chain of scuttlebutt, but, like Meridian Pint, it’s Meiwah!! And it’s something, so here goes – Jason reports:

“I talked with a Meiwah staffer today and apparently the joint’s *moving* to a venue somewhere downtown.”

I have no idea what percentage to allot this, so I’ll just say – fingers crossed and stay tuned!!

11th and Park Road, NW

I don’t have a lot to go on but what what the hell, the dragon must be fed. I’m gonna give this a 71% accuracy rating from the get go because the chain of scuttlebutt is a little looser than what I normally post. Nevertheless, because obviously this location is of major import – let me unburden myself of the morsel I’ve acquired with no further delay. (more…)

Not a lot to go on but before I get scooped by someone else – I hear Bar Pilar may be for sale and based on the silence from my queries it seems very likely that it either has or is close to happening. Updates when we learn more.

Ed. Note: Bar Pilar is a neighborhood gem and I hope, if this is true, it doesn’t change too drastically.

My sources deep in the dough tell me that a Ledo Pizza could be taking over the space. A Ledo Pizza opened up on H Street, NE last summer. Check out Ledo’s menu here.  I give this scuttlebutt a 78% accuracy rating.  STAY TUNED.

Thanks to all who passed on from their announcement:

“Bar Roubaix has officially closed. Thanks to everyone who supported us during our run. We greatly appreciate your patronage. Please visit our sister location next door at Lou’s City Bar.”

Back in January we learned that Sim’s Creole Kitchen was popping up here for Mardi Gras. Bar Roubaix opened here back in December 2017. Before Bar Roubaix this space was home to (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I confirmed with the owner that after being a Dupont staple for decades the Royal Palace’s last night will be this Saturday. The building is being sold along with the license but the current owner was unsure of the new owners plans.

I think the awning summed it up best “Bar, Food & Fun.

Spoke to him again last night it’s been 37 years!”

Another reader reports (I had no idea there were so many Royal Palace fans): (more…)

14th and R Street, NW

A reader reports last night:

“Went by Red Light tonight and it was…closed! No sign on the front or anything. Is it closed for good?? What of the fried gnocci??”

Ed. Note: Monday hours are listed as open from 5pm-1am.

A commenter reports:

“From someone who used to work for that restaurant group, “They always close on Mondays during the winter, but you’d think they would advertise that…” So, who knows…. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”

Hmm, this is curious. (more…)

8th and Upshur St, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Old Ruta Del Vino to become a Beer Bourbon and BBQ joint with soft opening in March or April said John, one of the three co-owners of the new business.

Ed. Note: Ruta Del Vino closed after two years back in November.

We peeked in to the window today [Sunday] and John came out to talk to us. (more…)
