“On Monday, January 7th, Espita will launch Espita Lonchería, a casual lunch-counter service from 11am – 2pm Monday – Friday. Guests will be able to enjoy lunch fare, Espita-style with small plates like Guacamole, Escabeche (pickled vegetables), Tacos (Al Pastor, Pescado, Brussels Sprouts, and Chorizo), Avocado Tostada, Endive Salad, and Huarache (wagyu beef crudo), among other savory items and desserts. Last week we learned Jose Andres was gonna be awesome during this shutdown again. The details via email:

“Offer is available from 2pm to 5pm
The offer is available only to US government employees who present a valid US government ID
The offer does not include sides or beverages
One sandwich per person per day per restaurant
The offer will last until the end of the furlough
The sandwiches offered in each restaurant will be the choice of ThinkFoodGroup restaurants”

LEON, Britain’s “Naturally Fast Food”, Announces 2nd D.C. Location

LEON opened their first D.C. location at 1801 L Street, NW back in September.

From a press release:

“District diners seeking “Naturally Fast Food” will soon have a second restaurant to get their LEON fix in D.C. Taking yet another step in their U.S. journey, LEON has signed a lease for a second location at 655 New York Avenue, with the new restaurant opening in late Spring 2019.”

Executive Chef Dan Giutsi of Whittle School & Studios Is Hungry for a Change to School Lunches

Hungry for school reform? What about school lunch?

Chef Dan Giusti will be visiting the District next Tuesday, December 11 to share his transition from heading a two Michelin star restaurant, to revolutionizing the way K-12 students eat.

After years in fine dining, Giusti founded Brigaid in 2016: a company which recruits trained chefs to lead institutional kitchens under the premise that students deserve real, wholesome food, cooked from scratch with care and passion.

Giusti will also share his vision for Whittle School & Studios, where he was recently named Executive Chef in Residence. 

All are welcome to experience a unique presentation from a chef who is innovating how the future leaders of tomorrow eat during the school day.

Hosted at the Whittle School & Studios Parent Information Center at the Mazza Gallerie from 6-8 p.m., Whittle School & Studios is delighted to partner with Dan in his mission to reimagine school lunch.

Beef n Bread Closed in Chinatown

Thanks to Tommy for sending word. Beef n Bread opened back in September 2015 (anyone remember the old video store?). Hopefully The Washington Post’s Tim Carman is doing OK. The owner tells me that he sold to Can Yurdagul the owner behind Sushi Capitol and Sushi Ogawa so stay tuned for some sorta Sushi concept. Not clear if plans are still for Poke or not. Updates as the new spot gets closer to opening.
