Huge growth since we first posted about All In Service DC on December 29th – nice!

From a press release:

“Launched at the end of 2016, All In Service DC organizes over 50 Washington, DC service businesses to donate profits from inauguration weekend to local service organizations. The 50 plus businesses are as diverse as the city, such as new-to-town Momofuku CCDC and longstanding Cafe Saint-Ex. A furniture store, Miss Pixie’s Furnishings & whatnot, and Logan 14 Aveda Salon & Spa have joined too.

“We invite all of DC’s business to join this amazing effort to demonstrate commitment to community,” says Alaina Dyne, All In Service DC co-creator. “We’d love to see the entire DC service industry participate to show our commitment to hospitality and community, when we’re serving hundreds of thousands of visitors. This inauguration weekend, eat and drink in DC for good.”

All In Service DC’s goals are both to fundraise for local service organizations and also to provide an opportunity for service workers throughout the city to contribute to their community, while they are working the inauguration weekend. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

On New Year’s Day around 6 PM I made a u-turn at 3rd and D Street NW and nearly hit an SUV. The driver and I both got out of our cars and there appeared to be no damage to either vehicle. There was a group of guys standing on the corner who started to yell out and it didn’t feel like the safest place in DC to be. I asked the other driver if everything was okay and he said yes so with that I got in my car and left. When I got home there was a very light scrape (no dent at all) on the front left side of my car. I obviously want to cover any damage to the other vehicle but not sure at all how to find the other driver. Can you post and connect us if the driver responds?”

Per the usual, email [email protected] and I’ll connect you with OP.

“Dear PoPville,

I don’t know who you all were, but thank you. I fell off my bike on H St this morning after [Sunday] getting a tire caught in the tracks and was totally disoriented and scared when all I could see was blood dripping from my head. Thank you in particular to the man who put pressure on the cut until the ambulance arrived. I’m so impressed by and thankful for my DC community that doesn’t hesitate to jump in and help. I wish I could repay you all.

good people

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve read many stories here about the kindness of strangers in times of trouble. I myself experienced this last week after a car hit me head-on while biking home near the National Mall. At least half a dozen people stopped to make sure I was ok, offering names and numbers as witnesses to the accident. An out-of-uniform cop make sure I had the information of the driver and asked a least of dozen times if I needed medical attention.

I thought this would make a good question at some point. Something like “When have you experienced the kindness of strangers/neighbors in a time of need?”

A very good example arose yesterday – Paul wrote us:

“@PoPville rock creek pkwy closed because of crash below Calvert. Photo looking at Connecticut bridge”

Mike Lenahan filled in some details:

“@PoPville I was directly behind the car that got hit. Came out of nowhere. Tree simply went from standing to horizontal in a second.”

“Car was crushed. I pulled over, called 911, & helped lift the tree off the car with maybe 15 other people.”

Dozens of people helped. Runners, commuters, a NPS ranger, and – of course – first responders.”

“A jogger who happened to be a doctor spoke to the man through the shattered window and kept him talking.”

“EMS starting tearing into the vehicle to get the man out. A bystander had a chainsaw that he used to cut up the massive trunk.”

DMV

“Dear PoPville,

I received a speeding ticket in the mail this afternoon. It was clearly delivered to the wrong address because in fact, the address on the ticket does not exist and I don’t own the car that was caught speeding. I notified the DMV via the general email but have doubts as to whether that will resolve the situation. I’d hate for there to be a mix up and someone have to pay a huge fine for not receiving the ticket in the first place. On the other hand, if something dodgy is at play, I’d like to let the DMV know. Any idea how to resolve?”

From an email:

“4Daysx3Nights x 30Kids x 20Years = A Million Memories

Every year for the past 19 years on the first Monday after school lets out, the staff and friends of Madam’s Organ Blues Bar in Washington D.C. take 30 kids from the tougher side of Adams Morgan to Dewey Beach, Delaware. A big swimming pool, boating excursions, clamming and catching crabs, cook-outs, surf, sun and a beach bonfire? It sounds like everyone’s dream!!

And for 4 days every year the kids are living that dream!!”

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to share a really great experience I had last night that is one of those small gestures that remind you there are really great people in this city.

I hailed a cab to go home last night and when I got in, the cab driver asked if I had cash because his credit reader was broken. My first reaction was extreme skepticism because I’ve had plenty of cab drivers lie to me about their card readers being broken in an attempt to get me to use cash so they don’t pay vendor fees. When I told him I didn’t have cash (I really didn’t), instead of getting frustrated, he said “okay, well I’ll give you a ride anyway.” (more…)

good samaritan

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to share a story of a true good Samaritan. I was walking this evening around 6:30pm near Connecticut and M St NW and saw a girl in her 20s stumbling down the sidewalk. I thought she was probably intoxicated, but then realized something else was going on when she started running in and out of traffic on Connecticut and then fell, slamming into the sidewalk. As I got closer I could see she could barely breathe and was clearly panicking, experiencing some sort of drug effects. While my friend and I were trying to figure out what to do, a woman in her 30s walked by, saw what was going on, and approached the girl. She asked her name, crouched down next to her and started rubbing her back and breathing with her, calming the girl down. The girl began vomiting and the woman held back her hair, not flinching a bit. She continued to talk to the girl, breathe with her and reassure her while I called an ambulance. Once the paramedics arrived and had taken control of the situation, she wished the girl well and quietly went on her way.

I know sometimes it seems there’s plenty of bad in the city, but this woman’s utter compassion was a first-hand reminder that people really are pretty amazing. The woman said that she was a med student, and I have no doubt she’ll be an amazing doctor. It was incredible to watch. The girl could have had a far worse outcome if it hadn’t been for someone willing to jump in and help a total stranger.”
