“Dear PoPville,

I received a speeding ticket in the mail this afternoon. It was clearly delivered to the wrong address because in fact, the address on the ticket does not exist and I don’t own the car that was caught speeding. I notified the DMV via the general email but have doubts as to whether that will resolve the situation. I’d hate for there to be a mix up and someone have to pay a huge fine for not receiving the ticket in the first place. On the other hand, if something dodgy is at play, I’d like to let the DMV know. Any idea how to resolve?”

Madam’s Organ continues cool streak taking DC School Kids to the Beach

A big swimming pool, boating excursions, clamming and catching crabs, cook-outs, surf, sun and a beach bonfire? It sounds like everyone’s dream!!

And for 4 days every year the kids are living that dream!!”

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to share a really great experience I had last night that is one of those small gestures that remind you there are really great people in this city.

I hailed a cab to go home last night and when I got in, the cab driver asked if I had cash because his credit reader was broken. My first reaction was extreme skepticism because I’ve had plenty of cab drivers lie to me about their card readers being broken in an attempt to get me to use cash so they don’t pay vendor fees. When I told him I didn’t have cash (I really didn’t), instead of getting frustrated, he said “okay, well I’ll give you a ride anyway.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to share a story of a true good Samaritan. I was walking this evening around 6:30pm near Connecticut and M St NW and saw a girl in her 20s stumbling down the sidewalk. I thought she was probably intoxicated, but then realized something else was going on when she started running in and out of traffic on Connecticut and then fell, slamming into the sidewalk. As I got closer I could see she could barely breathe and was clearly panicking, experiencing some sort of drug effects. While my friend and I were trying to figure out what to do, a woman in her 30s walked by, saw what was going on, and approached the girl. She asked her name, crouched down next to her and started rubbing her back and breathing with her, calming the girl down. The girl began vomiting and the woman held back her hair, not flinching a bit. She continued to talk to the girl, breathe with her and reassure her while I called an ambulance. Once the paramedics arrived and had taken control of the situation, she wished the girl well and quietly went on her way.

I know sometimes it seems there’s plenty of bad in the city, but this woman’s utter compassion was a first-hand reminder that people really are pretty amazing. The woman said that she was a med student, and I have no doubt she’ll be an amazing doctor. It was incredible to watch. The girl could have had a far worse outcome if it hadn’t been for someone willing to jump in and help a total stranger.”

“Dear PoPville,

Last night, after making the mistake of going to the Trader Joe’s in Foggy Bottom (and waiting in line for 45 minutes), I had to make my way back to Eckington. After several bus plans fell through because they never showed up, my phone died and I decided to make my way to Chinatown to take the P6. Conditions were awful and at 7th & H a man fell in the middle of the street – I helped him up only to have him say a few pervy things to me. Classic DC.

All of this made for a really crappy and cold night. Then my grocery bag ripped at the bus stop that I ended up standing at for 30 minutes. I want to say THANK YOU to a man named Roger who ran across the street to Walgreens to get me a few plastic bags that I could put my groceries in. This was one of my worst DC commutes (it took 2.5 hours to go about 4 miles), but he reminded me that some people are really good. Roger – if you see this thank you from the bottom of my heart – I will pay it forward.”

“We received over 1000 handmade cards this year. The vast majority of the card makers learned of the project through Prince of Petworth/PoPville. The amount of effort and thoughtfulness that went into the cards is pretty overwhelming as I sort through them for tomorrow’s delivery. Just wanted to say thank you for spreading the word and thank you to all of the individuals, offices, churches, schools, and other groups who came together for this service project. Our neighbors at the AFRH will truly enjoy each and everyone.

Dear PoP – Good Samaritan Shout Out

“Dear PoP,

Last night I was extremely fortunate to be the the recipient of some anonymous goodwill from a fellow DC resident, and I would like to thank him…so I need your help in relaying that message. After exiting a cab at 16th and Park around 11:30pm, I quickly realized I left my cell phone in the cab. And, since I had no idea how to locate the cab, I decided to use my apartment building’s phone to call my cell with hopes of the cabbie finding it.

Luckily, the cab’s next client answered the phone, and negotiated with the cab driver to return the phone to me ASAP. A short 20 minutes later, the cabbie returned to 16th and Park, with the message that the mystery man paid the fare for my phone’s ride home.

So, a special thanks to that guy for his awesome act of kindness. I’m guessing that most people would have handed it to the cabbie and went on their way.”

“I just came across the post on the PoP blog about claiming Economic Stimulus Payment rebate checks, and I wanted to let you know that there’s going to be free help for filers on Oct 11 at the MLK library. Volunteers with the DC Earned Income Tax Campaign will be there from 10am-2pm helping people file their returns.

So if anyone knows people who haven’t filed their returns and/or don’t know how to file they can come in on the 11th and get help.
