“Dear PoPville,

I live on Irving Street between Georgia Avenue and 14th Street, and it is constantly littered with trash. Two things exacerbate this: the south side of the street has street-side trash pickup that blows loose bits of trash everywhere, and my multiple attempts for public trash cans have been rejected by 311.

Today, I came home to find 3 lovely young women in Howard Bison jackets picking up every tiny bit of trash on the street, smiling and making their way down Irving. I jumped out of my car to thank them and they just waved off my thanks.

I’m not sure what prompted this, but thank you Howard University and thank you to students doing this on a blustery, gloomy day instead of Black Friday shopping.”

“Dear Popville,

As I was walking through Franklin Square today I noticed that someone left a scarf, a couple granola bars, a pair of boots and a freshly laundered shirt on one of the benches.

Whoever you are, I’d like to say thank you. Its going to get down to 26 degrees tonight and i’m sure this act of kindness will mean the world to someone.”

“Dear PoPville,

I just wanted to write to share the story of a good Samaritan who helped me and my partner out with car trouble this evening in Kalorama. We were trying to replace a battery in a Volkswagen but after a lot of sweat, money spent, and mosquito bites, we realized we did not have the tools to complete the removal of the old battery because of where a certain bolt was in the car. All the stores were closed and the car was totally dead so we were really discouraged. Lo and behold, a man (middle aged with Caribbean accent of some kind, introduced self as Jeronimo on his way out) driving by us asked if we needed a jump.

Sort of as a joke we replied that we were good unless he had a socket wrench extension, assuming he only had cables. “I’ve got one,” he said, and to our surprise he parked and got out a big toolbox that had everything we needed to complete the fix. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

As you know, Zeppelin restaurant on 9th and Q has been in the process of painting an awesome monster mural on its wall over the last few months. My son, Konrad, attends Seaton and we walk by the mural everyday to and from school  – I should add that he is also a huge fan of all things monster (we have a godzilla poster in our kitchen, so it might be genetic). As the mural was going up Konrad had daily conversations with the artist, and he was really happy to see King Kong and a gigantic octopus join Godzilla in the mural. But, there was a problem: Mothra had been left out.

Boundary Stone is of course one of the best pubs in D.C. for many reasons. And this is a big one.

So much awfulness bringing out so much greatness. Thanks to all who donated from Team PoPville we represented properly! And oh my God, did so many people rally for this. And while Boundary Stone thanks many key players (see below), I’d like to take the opportunity to thank them, and especially the Croke family, for all they do for this event. It is truly stunning to witness. The passion they have in fighting this awful illness is truly inspiring. And it’s a good reminder that while all this negativity abounds these days, there is also much greatness to celebrate. So on behalf of so many, thank you to Boundary Stone for leading the charge in this fight year after year after year.

And Brandon Skall, of D.C. Brau fame, really is the greatest emcee I’ve ever witnessed.

From Boundary Stone:

“Wow. Wow. Wow! We are blown away by the awesomeness of our community! Thanks to all who donated, volunteered and came out in force to our St. Baldrick’s Foundation shave party on Sunday. Together we raised $155,000 for pediatric cancer research! ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS!! INCREDIBLE!!!! (more…)

This was nice so thought I’d share. Last night Elaine Filadelfo tweeted us:

“I found someone’s tip on 14th St. What do you think that name is? (…and do you just so happen to know who they are?)”

And within an hour:

“Her name is Leigh Rieley, she’s my wife and a hair stylist at immortal Beloved!”

Huzzah – all is not awful!!

From MPD:

“First District Detectives are currently investigating an Assault w/a Dangerous Weapon (ADW) which occurred Monday evening on Kings Court SE at approximately 1915 hours.

A male complainant reports he interrupted a Theft from Automobile in progress and was subsequently surrounded by three male subjects. At one point, one of the subjects struck the complainant in the head with a rock causing the complainant to drop his cellular phone to the ground. (more…)

Hero

Thanks to Katie for sharing:

“Warning: this is a POSITIVE “does anyone recognize this guy?” Doorbell camera post. Typically posted videos from Ring cameras are about package thefts, break ins, people juggling car doors on the street to see what’s open…and our neighborhood list serv is always littered with these this time of year. But this morning I saw an alert while I was as setting up my 6am class at Off Road DC – I clicked over and thought it was a little weird for a delivery that early, but figured maybe someone got my mail or whatever. Turns out: I was in a huge rush this am and didn’t zip my bag. My wallet fell out in the middle of the road. This guy was nice enough to stop his van, clearly checked the address on the ID and returned it under our mat. Anyone who lives in DC knows this is pretty much unheard of- you drop a wallet, you lose a wallet, and you usually lose everything in your accounts if you’re not quick, too. Counting my blessings today- im damn lucky. Random Dallas fan in the plaid with the white van: thank you. You’re what’s right in the world.

Should you spot a quiet act of heroism please send an email with a brief description and the neighborhood where it was witnessed to [email protected].

“PoPville peeps,

I volunteer with Charlie’s Place, a tremendous DC homeless program in Dupont Circle that provides meals and counseling to the homeless in the neighborhood. I’m hoping the PoPville community can come through as usual to show this little DC charity some Thanksgiving love. We need donations of food or funds to provide their Thanksgiving meal – see the list above.

Because everybody wants to volunteer on Thanksgiving Day, (more…)
