“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to share an experience that has shown me there is still kindness in the world. I work for a large international non-profit and yesterday 70 people were laid off, 10% of employees. I am safe but know many of the employees, including my best friend, whom I’ve worked with for more than 7 years that were impacted. I was angry at the world and went for a run. After 4 miles I was overcome with emotion and stopped at the corner of 16th and S St NW to compose myself. As I was doubled over sobbing, a kind man stopped and walked over to me.
He lowered his mask and asked if I was ok. We talked, from a distance for more than 10 min. I explained the situation, he asked how I was doing and about my friend and shared how he was dealing with the stress under these awful circumstances. His caring words calmed me down and reminded me that we are all in this together. I thanked him and continued on my run. I regret now that I did not get his name but want to thank this stranger for his kindness and compassion. May we all have a similar reminder. Now, go wash your hands.”
