“Dear PoPville,

I saw on Twitter that splash pads will not reopen in Phase Two. Can anyone explain why that’s the case? The playgrounds are finally open, but mostly uninhabitable between 10am-5pm because of the heat. I’m confused about DCDPR’s reasoning that kids are somehow able to socially distance on playground equipment but not when frolicking around chlorinated water 20 feet away. This is especially urgent for kids who don’t have access to air conditioning and have no place to cool down during the day. I really hope DCDPR changes it’s plans or can clarify the distinction.”

From DPR:

“In accordance with Mayor Muriel Bower’s lifting of the District’s Stay-at-Home Order and the start of Phase Two, DPR has reopened playgrounds and athletic courts and will begin accepting permits for outdoor parks and green spaces for social gatherings of no more than 50 persons.

Like you, DPR is excited to begin the second phase of reopening our amenities after an extended closure. We look forward to welcoming residents back and appreciate your patience as we work to make sure all these public spaces meet our Gold Standard and are ready for our residents’ use. If an amenity at your local DPR facility is not ready immediately, rest assured we are working as fast as possible and it will be open soon.

Starting Monday, June 22, the following DPR facilities will be OPEN with social distancing safeguards: (more…)

1348 H Street, NE

Thanks to J. and G. for sending word about Red Rocks H Street location closing: “Per an Employee of Red Rocks, H Street location is already permanently closed.”

The location for H Street on their website has been taken down and the Red Rocks H Street specific website appears to now be a Turkish gambling forum, I’m not sure as my Portuguese is a bit rusty. Red Rocks opened their H Street location in August of 2013.

1610 14th Street, NW

Oh lord, this follows the news of Peregrine’s upcoming closure a block away.

Update: Another reader reports: “I called and spoke to Wesley at Aqua al 2 (their sister restaurant on Barracks Row) and he confirmed that both Ghibellina and Sotto have closed in their current location. He said they may reopen at a different location in the future, but as of now they are closed.”

A reader reports: “Happening right now (8:00 am, Tuesday). Things Being moved out of Ghibellina. One mover said “they’re closed”. “Another said we are moving everything out.” One of my favorite restaurants.” (more…)

1101 Connecticut Ave, NW via LA Fitness

“Dear PoPville,

LA Fitness’ re-opening email has NOT ONE syllable about what they’ve specifically done to clean the place, let alone anything on an ongoing basis. The WSC email you published on Monday (it’s now Tuesday) talked the talk about “deep cleaning.” How well they execute that, I sure don’t know. At least they talk the talk. I am considering switching from LAF to WSC.

Read this sentence for how much hedging they do !!
‘While closed, we’ve been working on changes aimed at making our clubs the safest place you can work out.’

So, they’ve been “working” — passive
“on changes” — it’s still in process
“aimed at” — not having achieved, but aimed at, that’s great
“making” — still in the process”

Statement on the closure of Eighteenth Street Lounge after 25 Years

Washington, D.C., has been the home of Eighteenth Street Lounge for the past 25 years, and I have had the great fortune to deliver unique nightlife experiences in a city that I love. The well-being of our patrons, and staff has always been a leading priority for the ESL team, and given the current uncertainty of when we can welcome patrons back safely, we have decided to close the space indefinitely.
