Not since Sparky’s Espresso Cafe closed next door many moons ago has Logan had such terrible coffee news. Thanks to John for sending from Peregrine:

“Next Sunday, June 28, will be our last day on 14th St NW. Our lease is up and the neighborhood rent has outpaced our sales. We are sad to be leaving this great community and our fantastic customers. Thank you for your support for the past nine years!” (more…)

2121 K Street, NW

Thanks to Ethan for sending Saturday: “Signage from Bobby’s Burger Bar on K street being removed”

Bobby’s Burger Palace opened on K Street in August 2011.

At the moment this location is still listed as temporarily closed on their website. Obviously the sign coming down is never a good sign, updates when/if the closure is announced as permanent.

Thanks to all who passed on the email from Washington Sports Club over the weekend:

“I just received this gem from everyone’s “favorite” gym chain, WSC. As you can see below, they’re saying that they expect to reopen at 6am on Monday but declined to provide literally *any* pertinent health and safety information (like, I don’t know, a reservation system), nor did they say anything about charging membership dues again. They only note that they’re “working diligently” to follow federal and county guidelines (which, boilerplate email fail on the latter point). That’s of course alarming, considering that they’re planning to reopen in 36 hours… (more…)

Thanks to Becci for sending. Earlier today the Mayor announced that a full Phase Two reopening would start on Monday.

From the National Gallery of Art:

“The National Gallery of Art, Washington, announced today that the Sculpture Garden will reopen to the public on Saturday, June 20, with reduced daily hours (11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), limited capacity, and one gate each for entry and exit. Visitors may enjoy the lush, 6.1-acre garden; meander along the curvilinear pathways; find shade and ample seating around the sprawling fountain; and discover 21 modern and contemporary outdoor sculptures. The Pavilion Café will offer prepackaged salads, sandwiches, and beverages for credit card-only purchase just outside the doors of the restaurant. The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden is located between 9th and 7th Streets NW on the National Mall. (more…)

From DCPL:

“Starting June 29, DC Library locations will begin expanding service on weekdays as part of Phase Two. In addition to current services including picking up and returning library materials, customers will soon be allowed to enter buildings to pick up books, remote printing and use a limited number of public computers and printers.

To ensure public health and safety of library staff and users, controlled entry will be in place to limit the number of people in the library at one time. Customers must wear a face mask or covering and practice social distancing when visiting the Library. Browsing for books and meeting room reservations are not part of the Phase Two reopening. Reading rooms and outdoor terraces remain closed to the public.

Starting Monday, June 29, the following locations will be open with expanded services from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

After over a month of waiting from the time I submitted my Pandemic Unemployment Assistance claim I finally began receiving benefits. I was surprised that the amount I received was only $779 per week. That would be $600 coming from Federal Unemployment Compensation and only $179 coming from DC’s Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. Based on my pre-Covid income I was expecting to be getting DC’s maximum weekly benefit amount of $444. According to DC’s Pandemic Unemployment FAQ sheet, $179 is the minimum weekly benefit and $444 is the maximum. The FAQ sheet does state that PUA claims may be established at the minimum amount, but that amount may be increased after the submitted wage documentation has been reviewed. (See below)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering what people are seeing as far as whether the “rental bubble” in DC is, if not popping, at least deflating a bit. Currently apartment hunting and wondering if, perhaps without the normal influx of summer interns or fall students/new young professionals, prices will go down in any significant way. Don’t want to get locked into a lease with the normal outrageous rates if owners/property managers will start to bring prices down.

Basically, interested in whether DC folks are in fact seeing impacts of Covid on the rental market?”
