BikeDC

“Dear PoPville,

Last night (Sun night) I did my typical evening bicycle ride around the National Mall. All was going fine until I got close to the Washington Monument at about 8:30 pm and noticed about 10-15 bicycles in front of me going very slow. I slowed down and let the group of teenage (aged 13-18) males do their thing for a couple minutes before realizing they were just purposefully taking up the entire path. I slowly tried to make my way through, and said, “coming by on your left”, and I even said “thanks” when slowly going through the middle of the group.

Suddenly, the group speeds up with me in the middle, so I pick up the pace and am pleasantly surprised thinking that they got the picture and realized they should either move over or keep going with the traffic.

Wrong. The bicyclist in front of me slammed on his brakes looking back at me, and I narrowly avoided crashing into him. I asked, “what are you doing, man?”

He proceeded to scream to his friends, “This guy yelled f*ck you to me!” (I did not say this) Then, an older teenager up front turned around and pointed at me, “this guy?!”

I realized they were turning on me so I tried to book it out of the way- but was rammed in the back tire by one biker, throwing me off my bike. (more…)

You may have heard or seen that Rock Creek Park has an invasive plant problem.

After a 9-year battle with bamboo in her backyard, Tori Garten knows first hand the challenges of fighting invasive plants.

When Tori first bought her house in Randolph Hills, she noticed a stand of bamboo was taking over the backyard and spreading into the neighboring parkland of Rock Creek. Tori explains, “The bamboo was on the ‘cons’ side of the pros and cons list. I knew at some point I’d have to deal with it.”

Like so many invasive plants, the bamboo started as something ornamental to create a privacy screen. It quickly spread by out-competing the native plants and taking over the local ecosystem (not to mention Tori’s garden and the adjoining parkland.) Rock Creek Conservancy and other local environmental groups lead regular invasive plant removal efforts to support our public lands struggling to combat this “growing” challenge. To keep these invasive plants from gaining (and re-gaining) footholds, park neighbors are essential partners to take action from their own homes and communities. (more…)

Crime

via google maps

Around 11:15am Nick reported:

“Sounded like more shots fired over in this area in the past 30 mins. Maybe closer to 8th and Rhode Island.”

I asked if other had heard them and Steve replied:

“I did while driving N on RI – called 911 to report. Saw one individual raise a gun and fire down 8th towards individual near RI intersection. Heard 4 shots fired before gunman fled into apartment complex.
Was at red light of that intersection, so looking up 7th NW & gunman pop from behind fence of complex, fire 4 shots (gun up & aimed) towards intersection/RI & possibly 5th shot before dashing off. Couldn’t see who they were firing at, but saw individual near car at intersection”
