Columbia Heights

Ed. Note: Back in July 2018 we reported a similar huge blast in Columbia Heights that took out a newspaper box.

NS reported: “Saw a huge flash followed immediately by a huge boom that shook me on my couch. At 14 & Irving facing the alley way.”

Many, many others confirm: “Just heard big explosion in Columbia Heights DC at 10:37pm”

“my ears are ringing and my head is throbbing. it happened in my alley in columbia heights.”

“Same, shook on the couch, also facing that alley. Didn’t see flash as blinds were closed.”

“there was smoke in the back alley behind cardoza unity health”

“that was insane”

DCFD investigated but “A short time ago, #DCsBravest investigated a report of an explosion heard in the Columbia Heights area. A search of the neighborhood found no evidence of an explosion or fire.”

Is a Missed Connection post appropriate during a pandemic? Because I’ve spent the last 24 hours kicking myself for not striking up a conversation, and thought maybe the community could help generate a beacon of light in this fog of socially-distanced isolation.

“Dear PoPville,

I currently live in DC, but my lease will expire on August 31st. With all of the free time recently, I’d like to start looking at studio rental properties (just online, not touring in person), but I think I’m still too far away to have anyone thinking about August rentals. My question is – has anyone found a sweet spot in terms of when to start looking for DC rental units – one month before move-in? Two months? Or less, like one or two weeks before?”

“Dear PoPville,

We are using the current apocalypse as an excuse to clean out our apartment and we have two used but working laptops that we thought might be helpful to students in need given the move to online learning. Do you know of anyone arranging for these kinds of donations?”
