bus

From WMATA:

“Metro will add more buses, more trains, and more hours of service beginning on Sunday, August 16, 2020, restoring most service to pre-Covid levels while maintaining a strong response posture to Covid-19. Metrorail will add 15 hours more service per week, with opening times returning to normal and the system closing two hours later each night in anticipation of potential increases in ridership after Labor Day.

Metro today also announced a significant investment to support the region’s overnight workers by doubling the discount customers receive when using Lyft during times Metro is not available.

Metrobus will offer more buses, running more frequent service beginning Sunday, August 23 restoring approximately 75 percent of pre-pandemic service. Weekday service will improve on 174 routes with most routes operating close to normal. Buses will operate until midnight, an additional hour.

In an effort to provide additional transportation options for late-night workers, Metro is increasing the subsidy from $3 to $6 for on-demand transportation service after hours. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My window AC units were fine when I wasn’t home all the time. But now that I am – they’re not. It’s time for an upgrade and I don’t know where to start. Recommendations for my next set of window units? Can I get someone in to install them (masked, distant, etc.)? What do I need to know and do so I can stop sweating?”

“Dear PoPville,

Any recommendations for restaurants that provide takeout in lower-waste containers? Compostable would be great, but just biodegradable or recyclable (clear plastic/aluminum) would be better than black plastic, which can’t be recycled. Beau Thai in Mt. Pleasant and most pizza places are pretty good. Anywhere else?”

Zoo

From the Smithsonian’s National Zoo:

“Beginning Friday, July 24, we are excited to welcome you back to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo! We’ve made several changes to provide a safe and great experience for our visitors, staff and animals.

In addition to limiting the number of visitors, we’ve implemented new safety protocols, procedures and guidelines. These changes include timed entry passes, requiring face covering for all visitors ages 6 and up, enhanced cleaning, and helpful social distancing markers and hand-sanitizing stations throughout the Zoo. For everyone’s safety, some areas of the Zoo are closed. We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding.

For more information, visit the Reopening Page on our website, and check out these Frequently Asked Questions.

We look forward to seeing you soon! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I went to the Aquatic Gardens today [Sunday] around 3:10pm and upon entering, we saw a park staff member or officer in uniform running to the info booth with a flotation device under her arm in a panic. We stopped in our tracks and she said “Did he go to get the gator?” “Where is it?” The person manning the booth said yes and pointed her to the left around the body of water. She ran in that direction and yelled “Tell him I’m over here, okay?” I’m from Florida and we don’t play with that so obviously we left but an alligator?! In DC?! Hoping your readers can shed some light on this.”

Ed. Note: On July 27th 2018 “an illegal 5-foot caiman” was removed from a home in SE. The National Zoo says: “The American alligator is found in the United States from North Carolina to the Rio Grande in Texas.”
