“Dear PoPville,
I work for a small company in DC that usually hosts a great holiday party at the end of the year. Due to COVID we are looking for creative ways to celebrate the holidays with our coworkers. Instead of sending gift cards in place of the holiday party we were trying to think of local or family businesses that do custom gift baskets, catering companies that send food (cooked or uncooked), or vineyards that will send gifts directly to our employees. If anyone is familiar with a company that provides these services and is in the area we would love to learn more about them!”
Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.
The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.
If you have any animal/pet photos you’d like to share for the regular fix please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and your neighborhood. AdoPtville is run by two volunteers who compile these pets weekly from local shelters.

Aurelia is the total package! A petite lady who loves to play, every toy is exciting to her except for a laser light, which she’d like you to know is just silly. She wants toys she can toss, catch and put her mouth on and having only one functioning eye doesn’t slow her down at all! Aurelia enjoys chasing balls and is getting pretty good at playing fetch with her favorite ball (one that’s bigger than her head)! She can and will entertain herself while you work (or sleep).
A quiet kitty, she does have a very small meow that usually comes out when she’s playing ball by herself. After a long play session, Aurelia is happy to curl up in your lap for a long nap. She has no problem with you typing away at your computer or working on Zoom while she sleeps.
Aurelia is both dog and cat friendly and would do well with animal companions, but since she’s so good at playing by herself, she’d probably be fine as an only cat as well. Aurelia is the perfect pet for someone; make that lucky person be you! Apply to meet her right now through City Kitties Rescue.

Cornelius is a go-with-the-flow kind of dog. Super sweet and low maintenance, he is the kind of buddy that enjoys very leisurely walks and doesn’t mind you hitting the snooze button a few times in the morning. He is a gentleman at home – doesn’t bark, beg or chew on anything. He loves spending time with his people, enjoys pets, and is very loyal. He’s even made friends with the neighbor’s dog.
Cornelius is adapting well to city life and all of its bustle. He is gaining confidence outside, though unexpected noises and unfamiliar people can startle him. He recovers pretty quickly and will continue on his merry way. Slow, calm introductions will warm Cornelius up to new people and get his tail wagging. Cheese and other treats are the great motivators for those walks later in the day. Cornelius is a sweet, low-key dog who will stand by you and love you without limits. Apply today to meet this heart of gold fella through City Dogs Rescue.

“Dear PoPville,
I was walking down Lanier Pl to grab coffee at Philz late this morning (Thursday, 10/15 around 1130) when I made eye contact with a very handsome man sitting on the patio with a friend. For a second, I thought it was a dude I’d previously dated (that ghosted me) so I turned around to confirm if it was him — it wasn’t. Basically, both of us ended up doing a double take to make eye contact again. At this point I flashed an inviting smile, alas mask got in the way and the moment was lost! If you are this handsome man and I read the situation correctly, hit me up! (If you are the handsome man and I read it wrong, please do not message me to destroy the fantasy!)”

“Dear PoPville,
“On Wednesday evening (October 14), a very helpful woman on her bike ride out of the Navy Yard gates stopped as I was walking my own across M Street SE. She asked if she could help with a flat tire and then laughed when I showed her that my bike was fine and I was just having a cargo problem — I bought more than I could safely carry in my bike bag at Blue Jacket and had to walk it home. Always good to find a fan of quality beer, especially if she’s a bike commuter.”
Ed. Note: If this is you, please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP. For those curious about passed missed connections, some have been made and when possibly I’ll try to update when/if more are made.

“Dear PoPville,
I live in a large apartment complex near the DC wharf. We have been told by the building’s management that due to COVID we are not allowed to have guests – even in our own apartments! Is this even legal? Can they restrict us from having people over, even when those guests are wearing masks as they enter the property? This large building isn’t full and the leasing office has guests (strangers) visit daily (wearing masks) who tour the property with the intent to lease. How is management allowed guests and paying residents aren’t. I don’t think they can legally restrict us but I was hoping someone might have some insight into this.”

Ed. Note: Red Derby has been awesome since 2007, with your support they will continue to be so in 2027.
“Dear PoPville,
I am writing to give a huge shout-out to the team at Red Derby – Sasha, Bianca and Ruby. For 28 straight Fridays, they have SUPPORTED us with terrific take out drinks and food. Each Friday, a small group of us gather for a few libations outside after a long week of work and the team at Derby always delivers. It’s become a tradition. It’s given us something to look forward to during this nightmare and it also helped support one of our absolute favorite local establishments. I highly recommend you check them out.”
