Fundraiser

3000 Connecticut Ave, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve created a Go Fund me campaign for the six long-time staffers summarily dismissed without severance late last month when Cathedral Care Pharmacy finally closed its doors after 96 years of service to the communities of Woodley, Cleveland and North Cleveland Park.

Now, with the holidays approaching, the displaced staffers face mounting medical, housing, food and utility bills they cannot afford to pay unless they very quickly find jobs in the worst of all times to be looking for them.”

“Dear PoPville,

We just received a letter that our elementary school is eliminating playground access for its students during the school day because of the CARE program. Is this happening at other schools? In the remote learning environment the playground is essential for elementary students. (more…)

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

My wife has been working ridiculous hours lately, and probably will be doing so until mid-December. Normally, we would reward ourselves with a vacation somewhere warm, but we’re not comfortable flying in the pandemic. Where is a good place to go for a long weekend, within driving distance (maybe 8 hours max), that has COVID-safe winter activities besides being cold (my wife doesn’t ski) and sitting in a hotel room? I had been thinking about the Homestead Resort in Virginia for the outdoor hot springs, but I’ve heard it’s kind of run down for the price, so not sure about that one. Any other ideas for a relaxing and safe weekend trip?”

Photos and words by @Pharipedia. Phari is one of my favorite photographers who contributes to our Instagram. He’s volunteered to share a bit more with us from his adventures around town. Phari lives on Capitol Hill.

“As the third oldest National Park established in the U.S., Rock Creek Park was molded by the two sons of Fredrick Law Olmsted who designed Central Park and is considered to be the father of American landscape architecture. Their vision was that “no matter how perfect the scenery of the park may be or may become, no matter how high it’s potential value, that value remains potential except insofar as it is enjoyed by large and ever larger numbers of people, poor and rich alike.” Thank you for leaving us such a treasure.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have a fat, healthy, about 8-inch-long orange and white Koi that has outgrown my outdoor pond. I’m not sure how old he/she is but he/she was about 3 inches long when I bought him/her and I’ve had him/her for about 3 years now. He/she is not aggressive at all, he/she has lots of smaller comet goldfish buddies that he/she gets along fine with. (more…)

Around 10:30pm in Columbia Heights was definitely fireworks.

And another round later: “Special thanks to the person who just blasted fireworks directly next to my bedroom window at 2am in Columbia Heights”

And in a new one that I’ll add to the list of options comes this report from Alan Henney at 2:20am:

“The EXPLOSIONS heard about 20 minutes ago in University Heights are tires bursting on a carjacked SUV that was just torched at 7th St and Randolph St NE-DC.”
