Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

Help! Some a-holes stole my Prius’ catalytic converter last night [Thursday], confirmed by the crazy loud engine sound when I started it and from my neighbor’s security camera. Unfortunately, this seems to be happening a lot throughout the country as these things have a hefty resale value. I’m hoping someone has advice on how to get it fixed and not break the bank, whether to go through my insurance company (I’ve already called the police to file a report), and most importantly how to prevent it from happening again since I have to park on the street.

“Dear PoPville,

As if we needed more evidence that the DC police budget is extremely inflated and misdirected…this scene from Columbia Rd NW between 18th and 16th on the evening of 2/6/21. A small group of peaceful protesters (30-40 people tops; I’m guessing racial justice-focused based on their chants, but I do not know the organizing group nor do I speak for them) walked down Columbia Rd while a disproportionately large police presence preceded them AND followed them. In the attached image, the only group NOT circled is the protestors.

Police escorting large protests/marches to maintain traffic safety is one thing, but this is excessive and clearly intimidating. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone know where to get a pizza bagel? Not a bagel pizza and none of this bread section 6 to a pack bagel business, but from a proper bagel maker. Call Your Mother is the best bagel I can find in DC, but they don’t have pizza bagels. Asking for a pregnant friend who needs one, badly. Photo for reference. Thank you!!”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in a big apartment building in Navy Yard, very near the Capitol. It seems like a good portion of the building is occupied by anti-maskers who have refused to wear masks in common spaces, such as elevators, hallways, lobbies, gyms, lounges, and package rooms. It’s my understanding that Mayor Bowser has written up rules (is that even the correct thing to call it??) about apartment buildings, stating face coverings are to be worn at all times in common/public areas of apartment buildings. The leasing office staff has sent out a few emails asking people to do so, but they are in no way enforcing it.

My significant other and I are both very high risk, and I got COVID in March and was extremely sick for 7 full weeks. (He was in chemotherapy on the West Coast at the time, so he thankfully wasn’t around me.) I’m terrified of getting it again before our turns for the vaccine come up, and my attempts to be more engaged with the office staff have resulted in mostly apathetic responses. (“We aren’t going to police the building.”) (more…)
