Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

Why does the monument has this streaking? Looks like it’s been power washed, I’ve never noticed it before. I might have thought it was some crazy trick of the light, but it’s like this on the east side as well. Tried looking it up online and only came up with an NPS acid rain article but I’m not sure if that’s the cause. Searching made more difficult since the monument is two different colors every day.”

“Dear PoPville,

We’re having a pretty gross problem and we’re wondering if your community has any advice. We’re in a row home and a neighbor to one side has practically abandoned the house, coming once every few months to pick up mail, but leaves the house in complete disrepair (one of the back windows has been broken over a year and a tree is growing through the roof). She’s basically moved out, but the bugs have moved in. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I bought a relatively small rowhouse here in DC recently and have come to discover that a quirk of the place is, due to the small size and open floor plan on the first floor, the smoke alarm goes off pretty much every time we cook unless we literally break out a fan and direct it at the smoke alarm to help ventilate it. “Dear PoPville,

Who makes the best Reuben in town?

Even great delis can make bad Reubens so it’s hard to know from looking at overall reviews, would appreciate some targeted suggestions. Opinions about corned beef sandwiches also appreciated, but mostly looking for a great Reuben. I’m sure there will be some opinions out there!”

Columbia Heights

Thanks to Sarah for passing on this GoFundMe:

“After losing his job at the Convention Center in March, Eliezer Albino began selling Puerto Rican food from catering pans on the street in Columbia Heights. His cooking has attracted praise on PoPville (“great empanadas and roast pork … [g]ive it a chance if you’re passing by!”), as well as The Washington Post (“his customers are regulars and passersby who can’t resist the smell”). With the money he made in the fall & early winter, Eliezer was able to stay afloat, and even ensure his 10-year-old son – who contracted COVID-19 last year – could have something resembling a normal Christmas holiday.

Two weeks ago, Eliezer stepped away from his gear, and when he returned, he found it thrown into a dumpster, bent out of shape, and almost entirely unsalvageable, destroying what was already his ‘plan b.’ (more…)
