“Dear PoPville,
I did not realize until Sunday morning that drivers wanting to park along streets that have Sunday-only back-in parking near churches in Shaw were required to park that way during those times. I just figured it was permissible but not required. I was wrong. In other words, residents must move or adjust how their cars are parked by 7am on Sundays along many streets in Shaw. When I walked by 7th St NW Sunday morning two MPD officers were ticketing cars that were not properly parked (backed in, protruding into one lane of traffic).
What’s more, I understand that MPD will not ticket vehicles that remain backed in and blocking one lane of roadway after 3pm unless a complaint is called in.
By the way, the churches have petitioned the city to extend back-in parking on 6th St NW until 9pm Sundays. The city extended the hours while doing a study earlier this year. The study found that extended hours parking was unsafe but the Universal House of Prayer has hired an attorney to petition the city to allow the extended parking to remain. This extended parking makes it more challenging to find a place to park for residents as, even if they find a spot along that road, they need to move their car/adjust how its parked at 9pm…”

BRGR Bash will take place in the heart of Shaw at 945 Florida Ave, NW— just steps away from the U Street/Cardozo Metro stop. The event, which brings together 10 of the DMV’s best burger chefs for a friendly competition amidst live music, games, and a craft beer garden, will happen rain or shine on JULY 19 from 1 to 6 pm.

D.C. BRGR Bash has partnered with DC Brau and Atlas Brew Works — two of D.C.’s top craft breweries — to offer a selection of 16 oz. drafts on sale for $5 at the event. On tap will be three beers from each brewery — DC Brau’s The Public, The Corruption, and The Tradition. Atlas Brew Works will pour District Common, Rowdy Rye and Home Rule.
D.C. BRGR Bash will feature live music for the entirety of the event from the following local acts: DJ John Bowen, house-infused funk group House of Soul, and the nine-piece soul and R&B powerhouse The Original Moonlighters.

600 block of Florida Ave, NW
“Dear PoPville,
Do you have information about the parking lot right in front of Howard Theatre that it currently used as “Premium Valet” parking? To whom does this land belong and who is managing it? Are there plans to develop this lot into a public space that respects and celebrates the heritage of the Howard Theatre? Currently, it is an eyesore, which hides the theater from Florida behind rows of parked utility trucks during the week, in a section of the U Street Heritage Trail that it increasingly nice between the Theatre itself, the Duke Ellington Sculpture and plaza and Right Proper Brewing Company. The city provided an $8 million grant and $4 million in Great Streets Tax Increment Financing (TIF) toward the restoration of the historic Theatre and it is sad that 2 years later – the space in front of remains a dilapidated parking lot.
The Theatre does not actually need this lot as it already has a Self Parking lot A which they describe as “a safe, secure and well lit parking lot located less than 1 block away from the Theatre on the corner of 7th and T Streets, NW”.
The site would be much more valued by being a park or a plaza. In fact, this was the original plan in the 2004 Development Framework for a cultural destination district within Washington DC’s greater Shaw/U street: it intended to “Relocate the car dealership and create a restaurant / cafe use with an open space / outdoor cafe component”.

How the Howard Theatre looked in 2008:
Back in Sept. of 2013 the great Marvin Gaye mural was painted on the side of a row house at the corner of 7th and S St, NW. Sadly one of the District’s coolest new murals looks to be shortlived:

Some interesting tidbits came out in yesterday’s discussion about Beau Thai applying for a liquor license at their new location at 7th and P St, NW. In the comments a couple readers say that the space at New Jersey and R St, NW:
“will become a noodle shop of some kind”
While the owner is unable to confirm at this time he does say:
“it’s getting a makeover and a new concept is going in that we think folks will love.”

7th and P Street, NW
Back in April we learned Beau Thai would be moving from their NJ and R St, NW location to the corner of 7th and P St, NW in the new Jefferson MarketPlace building this Fall. They’ve now applied for a liquor license and word on the street is that something good will be coming to the NJ and R Street location – stay tuned.
