The Oslo’s website says:

“Oslo is a 9-unit apartment building in Shaw. There are 3- and 4-bedroom units. It’s the perfect home for friends, or maybe you just like a lot of space.

FEATURES:

It’s a brand new building.
Every bedroom has its own bathroom. Never again will you argue over whose turn it is to buy toilet paper.
Modern design, space efficient units, minimalist features.
Kitchen with stainless steel appliances including a stove, oven, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, and large basin sink.
Large walk-in showers. No grimy tub.
A space-saving, stackable washer and dryer in every unit.
There are windows everywhere. We’re talking about a lot of light.
Roof deck where you’ll spend your summer.
A small community. You (should) know your neighbors. There’s only 33 of you.
Amazing location in Shaw. Great restaurants, bars with people you want to talk to, some of the best music venues in the city. And the building’s a block from the Shaw Metro station.
Currently under construction. Ready November move-in.”

Chercher Ethiopian Restaurant quietly opened in this small downstairs space back in 2012. Could be another “hidden” gem according to the Yelp reviews. And if that’s the case – good news – they’re expanding into the upstairs space! Updates when that section gets closer to opening. In the meantime anyone try them out yet?

Don’t let the outside deceive you. When we first learned of this new pub back in December I really didn’t know what to expect. As always the photos will do more than any words I can provide. I got an early look and spoke with one of the owners, Brian Leonard, and he tells me they are hoping for an October 20th opening.

A few other tidbits before the photos – there are two bars one up front and one in the back (back bar is made of an old bowling alley lane but more on that in a bit). While there will be two tvs and a projection screen for big events, this is much more of a neighborhood/beer bar rather than a sports bar. And speaking of beer there will be 14 draft beer lines in the front bar to start with plans to add more. As for food – they are working (with a partner many will recognize) on offering sandwiches.

But, as won’t be a surprise to followers of this blog, my favorite part of this bar is the details. And the great thing – they weren’t even finished yet and I was already blown away by how much cool stuff they found. Even at this pre-preview stage I feel very comfortable in saying this is going to be an awesome addition to lower 9th Street. Have an early look and of course we’ll revisit with final photos when they are closer to opening for real:

In my memory this is one of the most turned over retail spaces (outside of Adams Morgan) in the District. Since Vegetate closed in 2009 the space has become an Ethiopian restaurant called Cafe Eagle then Taqueria Mexicana then an Ethiopian Sports Bar and Restaurant named Eagle (again) then was renamed Northern Restaurant.  In July of 2012 Secret Lounge and Sports Bar opened up but closed in Nov. 2013. Given the amount of work being done, now it looks like something permanent is coming:

Demo permit says new restaurant – stay tuned.

marvin_mural

Thanks to all who sent emails and tweets about the new Marvin mural in Shaw replacing the one recently covered up by new construction. One reader sends the photo above and writes:

“Marvin is Back! Aneikan Udofo is painting Marvin Gaye on S St., NW, between 7th & 8th.”

Ed. Note: I’ll revisit and post when the mural is finished. So happy to see it happening!

Word on the street is that the former variety store (closed last month) and the former wing house (closed for year) is slated for demo at some point.

penelope 2

“Dear PoPville,

This morning my friend woke up to a pushed in window and both of her cats missing. One cat was quickly found, but Penelope is still out there. 10 pound female tabby might be a bit skittish. Is also microchipped. Penelope lives at 9th and T Sts NW and her humans are putting up flyers, leaving out food, etc. If anyone in the Shaw/ U St area sees Penelope or a cat that looks at all similar, please call 410-236-8186.”
