“Dear PoPville,

I nominate these two buildings on the 2100 block of Georgia Avenue, NW for the Horse’s Ass award. These derelict properties are on the site of the once planned Howard Town Center. The development, proposed years ago, received an $11 million tax break in 2012 (over the objection of DC’s CFO) before being canceled in 2013 after a falling out between Howard University (the property owner) and Cohen Siegal Investors (the developer).
The two parties locked in a legal dispute ever since. The most recent news available (June 2015) is that the DC Court of Appeals overturned an earlier ruling and sent the matter back to a lower court.

cc_dog

“Dear PoPville,

After our walk this morning [Sunday], my dog, Dax, and I stopped by Compass Coffee on 8th Street. I tied her up to one of the steel beams attached to the building to the left of the door. I had finished ordering coffee when one of the staff members pointed and asked if that was my dog. A man had untied her and was walking away with her towards T St. I ran out of the door and caught up with them. We struggled for the leash for a second and I pushed him to the ground. He got up and ran off. Dax is a bit of a nervous dog so I stopped to check her out and try to calm her down. He had removed her gentle leader and had wrapped it around her neck. Other than that and being scared, she was fine. I walked back into Compass and grabbed my coffee, talked with a few people about what happened, and then went home. It was a bit of a crazy morning, but, luckily, it all ended okay.”

dacha
7th and Q Street, NW

Update from Dacha:

“We are required to apply for change of hours for the license, but that does not mean the hours for the outside component of our operations will change.

The indoor component, which had no hours of operations previously, gets customary hours that we agreed upon in the last neighborhood agreement. The outdoor component – sidewalk cafe – will have exactly the same hours as it has now. This will be stipulated in the license when it is issued. It would be impractical (if not impossible) for us to apply for change of hours for the outdoor component because that would violate our agreement with the neighborhood.”

From a liquor license application change for Dacha Beer Garden:

“Applicant requests a Change of Hours of operation and alcoholic beverage sales and consumption.

PROPOSED HOURS OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE SALES/SERVICE/CONSUMPTION
