stand with vulnerable

“I live on Maryland Avenue NE and yesterday noticed someone had vandalized the Sasha Bruce House, most likely on Saturday night. On the second story someone had spray painted a bunch of swastikas. The Sasha Bruce House is a group home providing help and guidance to homeless teenagers. If you’re interested, the Washington Post did a great piece on it a few months ago. The vandalism is horrible, and has left me with a feeling of uneasiness- being in a liberally dominant environment like DC has made me feel safer and away from hatred associated with Donald Trump, but this isn’t the case anymore.

Here’s my question, and it feels a little silly- what can I do? I’m donating money to the charity on their site but am wondering if anyone knows how vandalism gets dealt with in DC. Is the home in charge of paying for it to be removed? Does it make sense to call and ask? ”

night construction

“Dear PoPville,

How do I file a noise complaint with the city? Construction began around midnight on H and 3 NE – and is ongoing – it’s been very hard to sleep. They are dealing with very loud heavy machinery and it’s been significantly noisy even with shut windows and running fans. All information I see online is either for noise complaints for trash pick up or for ABRA related (bars/restaurants). Any help is appreciated! (please excuse any typos – it’s been a long night!)”

From an email:

“I wanted to let you know about an exhibit of some of my street portraits at Sidamo Coffee & Tea (417 H St. NE).  I pulled together this exhibit following the 2016 election, and choosing the photos was part of my way of coming to terms with the thought of a President Trump. I also wanted to respond to the slurs Trump heaped on so many during the campaign, from women to Muslims to Latinos.  For more on what I was thinking as I made my selections, see this post on DC Focused.   You can see all of the exhibit photos here. It will likely be up at Sidamo for 2-3 months.”

“Dear PoPville,

Heads up-my friend and I each used our credit cards today to buy groceries at the H Street Giant. Within 2 hours of each transaction, we each received fraud alerts from our banks. My friend’s card was only fraudulently charged about $10, but someone made about $1600 worth of purchases on mine. Most charges were at the same Giant and all were made very shortly after our original purchases. Thankfully, our banks reversed these charges. I called the Giant to alert them of the situation, was told the manager wasn’t on site, and never received a call back. I’m sure it’s not a huge issue since banks are so vigilant these days, but I wanted to make you aware, just in case. FYI-both of the stolen cards were originally paid with a chip, not a swipe. Everyone who shopped at Giant today [this weekend] check your online banking!”
